and I have a snozu that I bought last year from costco in 2T ready for this year. She'll probably wear that one to DC because it's better for prolonged periods outside.
I think fleece is really the only thing that can be worn in the car seat.
Everyone has a fleece option -- old navy, gap, carters etc.
I think some folks use the 3-in-1 coats so they take off the outer layer.
I just use regular coats and my kids take them off in the car. We've done gap (pretty good) old navy (not very warm) and a few other brands. I'm thinking of trying HA coats this fall for my daughter. My son still fits in his Gap coat from last year.

Are the Snozu's 3-in-1 coats? I like the 3-in-1 idea due to the carseat issue. Someone else recommended these to me last year, but he wasn't big enough at the time to fit in their smallest size.
Last year we bought the Children's Place 3-in-1 and loved it!

I had the snozu for DD last year. That coat was great.
This is what we used for the past 2 fall/winters for outings. We'll do the same this year as well, although I'm thinking about getting the one with the hood. We had a puffy coat for playing in the snow.

Quoting here to tag you (and djc315 and pugz) - I haven't seen them at my local Costco yet this year but they do have them online -for $24.99, score!
Patagonia Nano Puff or Down Sweater. Both are car seat "approved" by the Car Seat Lady. DS had the Nano Puff last year, and this year we'll upgrade to the Down Sweater. The Nano was perfect last year when he wasn't outside for extended periods. I have a Down Sweater and it's warm enough for long periods of time outside, yet super thin, and not too hot in the car. It breaths well.
ETA: I live in New England and this coat seems to be a staple for lots of young kids.
I had a Colombia fleece last year, safe for the car seat. BUT I got so sick of switching him out of it into a thicker coat. He hated that 30 seconds of being cold, tantrum every time. I'm going to do the CP 3-in-1 coat this year, on the recommendation of Ashley&Scott, my BFF.
We have a Columbia fleece and a Patagonia Down Sweater for non-wet cool/cold weather, then a Hatley rain coat for wet temperate/cool weather, and an LL Bean Katahdin parka for wet cold weather. The Columbia and the Patagonia are fine for car seats.
Check out Sierra Trading Post. They often have great toddler coat options. It's where I bought the Columbia and Hatley coats. Patagonia was clearanced Tea Collection, LL Bean was eBay (and is technically a girls' style, but for $15 I do not care.

I have just bought DS a winter coat knowing it would just be for outside play. It rides in the backseat of the car in case we need it for an emergency but he doesn't wear it in the car. I keep fleece blankets in the car to wrap over him once he's buckled in. He is still in his car seat and will be until DD is ready to move out of the infant carrier. Once we switch him to a belt positioning booster I will let him wear a coat I suppose.

Yep we loved our 3-in-1, I haven't bought one yet for this year. @supergreen I'll tag you when I see a good sale.
pugz as someone else mentioned this CP has all animal print for girl options , not sure what they were thinking. I would try consignment or swap pages for last year's solid versions.
I use different fleeces. I like the Columbia and ON best. The ON ones have fun patterns DD likes are soft and warm and actually for ON last forever. They're her cousins' handmedowns.
I use whatever puffer coat or parka thing is in the handmedown bin. She has a couple Pacific Trails I really like.
I never change fleece after we get out (unless we're like at a winter parade or something). She never gets cold in the 30 seconds in and out to a place...and it gets cold here.
She also for playing outside can't just wear a fleece (like I said, frigid here) so I never will find a coat that's carseat safe and outdoor warm...which doesn't really matter because we rarely do both at the same time.

Thanks! I'm going to get the "storm" color. DS loves things that are "oave" (orange)
I used a Columbia fleece jacket last year for DS when he was in the car seat. This year I have a 3-in-1 jacket from old navy for him. He will wear just the fleece jacket in car seat.
I'm with hocus2. I buy J a fleece each year, and this year the girls too, that they wear in the car. Then I get J a regular coat, puffy, 3 in 1 etc he can wear when we are outside for any length of time. Im not comfortable with other coats in the car.
This car seat "approval", where is it coming from? Is this actual stated on the tags of the coat?
Not that I know of. I think it's something unofficial that the Carseat Lady does...
I get the Target 4-in-1 jackets. The inner is fleece with a layer of nylon. It is really thin, but quite warm and breaks the wind, unlike a regular fleece jacket. We layer on the outer shell for snow play.
