Yes, I know about the flashing of headlights thing, but generally don't flash my lights to warn folks about cops. Road issues, accidents, animals on the road, etc, sure. To let someone know their lights are not on, yep. To warn about cops, no.
I do for animals and when there are idiots walking on the road in the middle of the night so another car doesn't accidentally hit them. For cops? No because they shouldn't be speeding anyways.
craftyone - My H just introduced me to waze. Too cool!
It is a thing. I don't do it because really a person should get caught if they're not driving responsibly. But I do flash my lights to warn about animals, or other hazards.

I promise I'm not a gang person coming to get you. I'm just absentminded and live in a well-lit area, and sometimes forget to turn on my headlights. I'm usually thinking "oh shit!! Thank you!!" when someone flashes me.
It does make me think of Weeds though, because I drive a hybrid, which is very quiet... Good for drive bys. Lol!
I used to do this. Pretty funny bc one time I did it I looked in the rearview and the cop was behind me flashing his lights to pull me over for speeding. DOH!! But I don't do it anymore bc I think people drive too damn fast in MA especially

It's a thing and I do it if by flashing my lights I'm not causing more of an issue (e.g. I wouldn't flash my lights to on coming traffic with someone driving right ahead of me or if there is bad weather, other distractions, etc.).
I do if it's near the end of the month and I see cops waiting in known speed traps to meet their quotas. Otherwise not really, because I just don't care that much.
Slightly related, I hate it when people turn their flashers on when it's raining. It's more distracting than the rain.

I do it sometimes. There are quite a few roads that I travel where cops often pull people over for going even 5 mph over the limit and the limit is bizarrely slow (like 30mph). I think that's excessive, so I flash. (BTW, these aren't near schools and the roads are winding and don't have visibility issues. I'm fairly certain it's just a way for the cops to make extra cash.)
