FORNEY, Texas -- Shocking new dash cam video shows a young mother being pulled over at gun point by police in Forney, Texas, all while her four little kids were in the car. Police admit they made a mistake but are refusing to apologize.
Kametra Barbour says she was driving four children under the age of 10 home when she was suddenly stopped and surrounded by police.
Officer: "Driver let me see your hands everybody stick their hands out the window." Barbour: "What is wrong?" Officer: "I'll tell you in a minute."
Barbour was told to exit the vehicle with her hands above her head. Police then shackled them in cuffs right in front of her children.
Barbour: "What is wrong? My kids!" Officer: "How old are they?" Barbour: "They're six and eight and ten, nine. What are we doing?" Officer: "Hold on a second, okay?" Barbour: "What is going on? Oh my God, you will terrify my children." Officer: "We got a complaint of a vehicle matching your description and your license plate, waving a gun out the window."
The traffic stop was in response to a 911 caller who had told dispatch four black men were waiving a gun out the window of a beige- or tan-colored Toyota.
The problem: Barbour's car is a burgundy red Nissan Maxima.
It wasn't until Barbour's 6-year-old son, Ryan, came out of the car with his hands up too that police realized they had made a mistake.
Officer 1: "Do they look young to you?" Officer 2: "They do to me." Officer 1: "Huh?" Officer 2: "They do to me." Officer 1: "Yep, they're young." Officer 1: "Gun down, gun down, gun down!"
The officers then quickly went to work trying to calm down the now terrified children.
Officer: "Ya'll okay? Just ya'll in the car?" Child: "No im scared." Officer: "It's okay." Child: "No, are we going to jail?" Officer: "No. No one is going to jail." Child: (Scream, crying) Officer: "Hey, stop crying. It's okay. It's okay. Everything's fine now."
The police department defends the traffic stop saying the officers responded appropriately to what they believed was a dangerous situation
"For the nature of the call - that a weapon was involved - yes," said Detective Clay with the Forney Police Department told ABC affiliate WFAA.

I saw this on ML. Ok if they said the plate matched, that's lying and absolutely needs to be addressed. But just the mistake of the car, it says in less than a minute it was cleared up and the officers spoke to the kids and explained it was ok. I don't excuse it or think it wasn't wicked scary, but less than a minute isn't like they detained everyone and interrogated. I hope they're taken to task (the officers) for flat out lying about the plate matching.
I saw this on the news this morning, and was pissed for her, and those poor kids in the car. So many teenagers have a terrible attitude about police--what will this do to those three boys' attitudes?

Except the car they were looking for was tan with 4 black men and they pulled over a red car with a black woman and her kids. Lies or no, it's clear the only thing they were looking for was the color of people's skin. Can you imagine a white soccer mom being confused with 4 white men in a different color car? I certainly can't. That's what makes this out of line, they were just pulling guns on brown people.

Well I'd say it's already been done to them, seeing as the six year old came out with his hands up.

Well I'd say it's already been down to them, seeing as the six year old came out with his hands up.
Right...and I'm thinking that will probably impact their attitudes about police.

The attitude towards police was already negatively impacted IMO. This incident just makes it worse and solidifies their negativity.
Oooooh, so you were saying that they already had that attitude because the boy knew to come out with his hands up?
When I watched the video, I thought he was doing it because the police were yelling at him to do so; I get what you're saying though. A few of my seniors last year did their satire project on "DWB", and that's the first thing I thought of when I saw this on the news this morning.
When the police pulled over a car that was obviously the wrong color, why not approach the car and apologize and explain the situation. Then when they saw a woman get out of the car, there was absolutely no reason to cuff her. They scared the shit out of her and her kids. Sorry, I was literally yelling at the tv this morning when the chief was defending how they handled it. I mean, I know he kind of has to publicly, but it's still enraging.
The exchange between the cops when the 6 year old gets out is horrifying. No one can tell me a six year old, in or out of a car, resembles a grown man. No one. And then that the two cops had to confirm that, 'yep they look a little young to me' seems to imply "well just give them a few more years."
Then there is the whole common sense thing that A SIX YEAR OLD DOES NOT LOOK LIKE A GROWN ADULT and the car not even remotely matching the suspected one.

See? I know you're not saying you're excusing it but for serious...I get possibly questioning the make of the car (Toyota vs. Nissan) but the color? NO. Also, NO WAY does a woman driving with small children look remotely like 4 men. This pisses me off.
Those poor kids. That poor woman. I can't imagine the terror. Less than a minute or no. Probably the longest minute of their lives.
The lying about the license plate should get those fucking cops fired.
"Not gonna lie; I kind of keep expecting you to post one day that you threw down on someone who clearly had no idea that today was NOT THEIR DAY." ~dontcallmeshirley
It's impossible to mistake a tan or beige car with a red one. And then to lie about matching the license plate? While this poor woman begs the officers to not terrify her children? And then the back and forth banter between the officers on whether the kids look young or not? They are 6-10, of course they look young. Get the fuck outta here with the 'they handled what they thought to be a dangerous situation correctly' shit. Apparently being black and driving down the road with your kids in the car is dangerous enough. My god.

Except think about Mr Respect My Authority (and no one gets hurt) Cop. What if he had pulled her over? And she wasn't compliant enough, fast enough? What if her six year old was a 16 year old and had come out to ask why his mom was being cuffed?
Do you have any idea how terrifying having a gun drawn on you is? How quickly things can get really fucked up? The only reason this turned out okay is because this poor family did everything exactly right. And that's not who should be carrying that burden.
Dude, MY attitude toward the police is bent. I found myself saying to myself, apropos of nothing yesterday in the car "FUCK the police" when driving by a patrol car. I'm 39 years old and white. And really, fuck them right in the face for even trying to say ANYTHING about this stop was appropriate. Just fuck them.
I'm so fucking done with this shit. Those officers are pieces of shit who are probably harassing another Black person right now. The department won't apologize for doing everything wrong because they don't care.

I'm right there with you. Police officers have shifted in my mind from "mostly assholes" to " don't trust the motherfuckers until proven otherwise".

Thank God they didn't get trigger happy and accidentally shoot one of those babies. This story is terrifying. I'm so glad everything was caught on camera.

They absolutely should be fired. As I said too, it is horrible and I can't imagine how frightened everyone was. I can't understand how the colors could be mixed up, tan and red aren't similar, but that's something subject to opinion maybe, but lying about her plate matching? That's not anything but a complete lie, no difference of opinion at all. Hopefully there'll be a follow up that they've been fired and she's suing. The poor children. I remember my parents being pulled over as a child and it's scary as shit, nevermind if one ends up handcuffed, etc. saying sorry is one thing, them actually facing consequences is another. Let's see it happen. (I hope that's not naive to think)
