Official times: swim (with long ass hike to transition): 6:48, t1: 2:31, bike: 42:04, t2: 0:55 run: 25:47 total: 1:18:08
so, i dont have my official splits, just my overall time, but i did WAY better than i expected at my first tri. this will be a short-ish recap.
this was a very small local tri, and one of my friends from my swim team is the race director - so a lot of my swim team was there (competing or cheering us on) but what was also good was that i was the 4th person in the water, so i didnt have a scary swim experience at all - it's nice to be connected
the swim was 300m - i was only passed by 1 1/2 people (someone caught up with me during the end and we finished together), i have no idea what my time was, but i didnt freak out, felt strong and didnt bash into lane lines too much. i went out slow and sped up once i knew i could. it's really silly how short the swim is. i realize it's the hardest leg for most people but it felt like nothing for me, i mean, it's not like im super duper speedy, but i swim so much that it wasnt really a challenge - just a way to get wet so i never overheated lol
the transition area was sort of far away, and while i was there - not at all daudling - tons of people came in and out in seconds, it was SO impressive. it's possible i took a long time to transition. i have no idea...still waiting for the splits.
the bike was 10 miles. im SLOW. i figured best case, id do it in 45 minutes. it's a loop you do three times, with some decent hills (im more afraid of downhill than uphill). i got more an dmore comfortable on the bike as i went on and eventually i realized i need to understand gears better, since i feltl ike i couldve been biking harder. as per my garmin, i did the bike in like 42 or 43 minutes, i dont totally remember (it's being annoying about uploading). a lot of people passed me. a LOT. but i passed people too! and only one was a kid on a BMX.
so i had no idea what to expect during the run. i expected it to be weird at first, then get better. but the opposite happened. i went out kind of conservatively, and felt fine the first two miles, and then the third mile felt BAD. like, really hard. my legs felt dead - which was weird since i coasted so much of the bike lol i did the 5k in about 25 minutes, which is a little over a minute off my fastest and most recent (i havent done one since last fall), but im told that's great for my first tri. i know i can run a lot harder than that, so ill have to do more bricks, for sure.
so my overall time was 1:18:08. i just wanted to break 1:30, and one of my friends said i should come in around 1:15 (which seemed fairly ambitious), so im thrilled with my time. i was 5/7 in my AG - and first was first overall woman, so like, that's a little annoying. but it's not like i expected to actually place, i just wanted to finish alive lol
it was really fun having people cheer for me, and seeing so many of my friends on the course, i think that really helped. also, i know i just need to get better on the bike and ill do really well.
thanks everyone here for answering all my silly questions! i feel like it was totally not a big deal, and just need to get more comfortable on the bike.
oh if i knew how to post pictures i would LOL if you follow me on twitter (and two of you do) you've seen plenty by now. ill update with the full results when they are posted.
YAY ME!!!
ps - is it too premature to get a tri magnet for my car? my 26.2 magnet is lonely lol
Love of my life baby boy born 11/11. One and done not by choice; 3 years of TTC yielded 4 MMC and 2 CPs, through 4 IUIs and 2 IVFs. Focusing on making the world a better place instead...and running.
Awesome, awesome!! Congrats on meeting your goal. I'm glad it was such a positive experience for you. I'm so proud and impressed by all of you conquering your first tri this summer!
ETA: you can absolutely get the magnet. Will it say "triathlete" or are you eyeing something else?
