Hi Ladies, I hope you don't mind me bugging you with a question I am sure has been covered before. I want to paint my expedit from Ikea (the 4 cube by 2 cube). I have googled and seen recommendations all over the place. A good primer seems key but it really varies whether people think you should sand (some say absolutely before the primer and after), some say not at all (you will screw up the laminate), etc. Any advice and is this a horrible idea? It is currently the ugly black-brown color and I want to paint the outside white and the inside cubes navy.
I have the same question, so I'm not much help! I'm thinking about painting our PAX wardrobe white. I'm worried I'll do a terrible job and ruin it. It was kind of expensive (for ikea) and I'm worried it won't hold up.

I know I am not so worried about ruining the expedit because it is old and wasn't that expensive to begin with. However, I am going to be mad if I shell out the money for paint and supplies and then ruin it. Whichever of us pulls the DIY trigger first needs to come back and report how successful they were. :?

Deal. I was also thinking I could try that peel and stick wall paper from target. I want to put it in my daughter!a room, so I could do something fun that way. And supposedly it would peel off. I'll keep you posted!
Edited to tag VeryViolet. I'm not so good at quoting, apparently.

I painted an Ikea bookcase. I did a very light sand, then primer (I used SW adhesion primer), then like 4 coats of straight up SW super paint in a semi gloss. (4 coats b/c we wanted a really well painted, used look). It was somewhat time consuming, but not at all difficult. I'd do it again.

I painted my Expedit and roughly followed the same steps. It's been several years and there's no wear except where it chipped from a heavy old school tube tv sitting on it.

Did you take it apart before you painted it?
Thanks for the tips. I think I am going to give it a try either this weekend or in November when I have another free weekend. LOL

Nope. I just took the doors off b/c we were changing out the hardware anyhow. I painted those with the same technique, but with the doors resting on those painters pyramids.
I've painted it and it took while (although mine was a bigger size). I added Floetrol to the paint to help make it look smooth, but otherwise did the steps as above.
