Oh my gosh that is great! I'll have to remember that for our trip to Dominican Republic this winter. Melted butter all over the clothes is totally worth the savings.

yeah, this might make one of my top 10 favorite questions on GBCN, I just love it - and her responses are good too (not crazy cakes, but honest and funny).
although it is a good question: what kind of snacks do you bring on trips? I have a hard time because I'm not really a big fan of granola bars, but I did want to pack something for Africa, just to have on hand since it's a long trip there and lots of travel time.
To answer your serious question, I bring some form of jerky, dried fruit, and nuts when traveling. I like the Sahale Snacks nut mix things. I also tuck packets of emergen-c in my carry on if flying cuz there's always someone on the plane who is hacking up a lung. I'm also trying to make a habit of bringing an empty nalgene to fill on the other side of security so I don't have to shell out for bottled water. My portfolio manages to survive if I forget though, so far anyways
I normally bring some nuts, some chocolate, larabars or other protein bars, jerky, I also brought little packets of Justin's almond butter and chocolate hazelnut butter. grabbed a banana in the airport and squeezed some on each bite.

surprised by all the beef jerky suggestions, never thought of that! but I guess it's a protein that would travel well (and sometimes I get tired of nuts), plus I love salt
Sometimes I bring an empty Nalgene to fill after security but I more often buy a bottled water and then just keep refilling the bottle for my whole trip. That way, if I forget it somewhere, I won't be upset about losing my nice Nalgene. As for snacks, I'm usually good with a bag of TJs trail mix and a quality chocolate bar, sometimes an apple or carrot sticks.
Bahaha, honesty, its a little frugal but I don't think she's crazy cakes for asking or considering. I mean, if she knows they'll only use one stick of butter but you have to buy the whole pound, I personally hate wasting food, especially animal products. I still wouldn't do it, but I don't think she's a complete nutter for asking. That said, OMG I love the person with the screen name of "havarti" saying "take me, take me!" That made me lol.
Also, um, why does everyone think that regular cheese would go bad? The French keep cheese usually just on a shelf in a cheese dome. Cheddar cheese especially would be fine.

I agree cheese is fine at room temp, but I think a bag traveling could experience a range of temperatures and warm cheddar cheese gets weird and slimy IMO. (although most people are probably thinking cheese needs to be refrigerated, so I disagree with that but still think it's not a great idea)
also just the risk of an exploding ziplock of melted butter would be enough to make me spend $50 on butter if that's what it takes!
Honestly, I think the idea of freezing the stick, putting it in a small plastic container and the container in a ziplock would be just fine. Or hell, I'd mash the butter into a small jar, like a baby food jar, and then in a ziplock for good measure.
That thread is hilarious to read but geez, some of those people are insanely paranoid about things "going bad." If I learned one thing about living in France, its that Americans are RIDICULOUS in their worries about things going bad/not being safe to eat.

well I'm also biased because to me, cooking on my vacation =/= vacation, lol. So basically this whole thing is stupid because why would I travel to do more housework
but yes, Americans are crazy about food going bad. If it looks fine and smells fine, it's probably fine!
DOES THIS MEAN WE CAN START TALKING ABOUT SECRET ELF?!!!
*insert gif from elf where he's running around the revolving door here*

NO!!!
WE HAVE TO GET PAST HALLOWEEN FIRST!
But if we're counting backwards then we want stuff mailed about 2 weeks before Xmas, with 4-6 week shopping window, 2 week sign up process.... So that means we need to start thinking about it soon.

Noooooo. Realistically, we have to start talking about this in 2-3 weeks.
