I would do the infant seat, It is very useful when they are little. Yes the convertible will last longer. But its a pain in the ass when they are little and fall asleep everywhere.
Definitely the infant car seat. I've used the infant car seat plus the stroller for all of our outings. L sleeps in his car seat with no problem and I couldn't imagine waking him to move him into a stroller.

Another vote for both. We used the infant seat for about a year, leaving it in the car for the last 4-6 months because it got heavy to carry. Then around 1 year we started with the convertible and she was in that until we got her a highback booster. We are expecting twins, and I will still go with the infant seats and convertibles. But we will just get two (not 4)and keep them with the van. So if you have the babies you get the van
We had a convertible for our first, and it was fine because I didn't have anything else to focus on and she slept through moving seats. But for the 2nd we are going to get an infant seat so that it's faster and easier while I'm also watching my 4yo.
With DD we got an infant seat for one car and a convertible for the other. That way we'd only be replacing one seat at a time. But moving her to and from the one car on a daily basis for daycare pick ups was such a PITA until she was bigger.
This pg I got a really good deal on a jogging-style stroller, infant seat and 2 bases ($300 total) so we are just gonna do that for now. I'm fine with keeping the stroller in the car or nearby if needed. If we gotta redo his seats in a year for whatever reason then we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

We had L in a convertible before she turned 1, but will once again start out in the infant seat. Geting her sleeping out of the car, letting her sleep in restaurants, etc is all worth the price of paying for both.

FTM here, but I actually have both...my cousin had 2 HUGE boys and her infant seat was still not expired but her 9 month old had out grown it, so she passed it along to me. I registered for a second base along with the Convertible seat. I now realize it will likely be a year closer to the expiration date before he/she will NEED to use it, but in the meantime, it's a car seat my parents can use since they will be helping us out quite a bit with the little one.
Something to keep in mind is expiration dates and 2nd kids if you are planning on a second. We waited until dd1 was one year to buy a convertible and dd2 is still using the same seat (DD1 now in a seat that converts to a booster) . You'll get more life out of your convertible if you wait to buy it till your little one outgrows the infant seat. And remember, you don't HAVE to take the infant seat out of the car. Once dd reached about 6 months they were too heavy to lug around but we still used the infant seat and just kept if in the car for another 6 months. Worked well for us.
