Brewers Grove 2014: Tree-themed beers benefit Grand Rapids urban canopy The Grand Rapids beer community is teaming up again with the urban forest crowd in an effort to raise money for expansion of the city canopy.
This weekend, 21 local breweries, a cidery, homebrew supply store and a handful of Grand Rapids bars and restaurants will begin serving a tree-themed beer, from which a portion of sales will help fund new tree plantings around the city.
The effort builds upon the Brewers Grove project last fall, when a group of Grand Rapids craft beer brewers planted 30 trees at Riverside Park using $8,000 raised from the sales of tree-themed beers in 2013.
The project is being administered by The Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, a nonprofit group advancing the Urban Forest Project canopy expansion effort.
The Urban Forest Project, funded by the Grand Rapids Community Foundation and a U.S. Forest Service grant, has a goal growing the city’s canopy to the 40 percent mark by 2035. It’s currently about 34 percent.

The beers will be tapped citywide on Friday, Aug. 29. City officials, brewers, urban forest folks and others involved are holding a kickoff party at Harmony Brewing Co. in Eastown at 5 p.m. that day.
"We want to be a benefit to the community that is very supportive of us and our industry,” said Jackson VanDyke, co-owner of Harmony. "This is a great way for the breweries to collaborate and do something positive for our city."
On Friday, Sept. 12, the cult classic movie “Strange Brew” will be shown at 8:30 p.m. on an outdoor screen at Riverside Park. Starting at 7 p.m., the public is invited to bring their own wine, cider or beer to enjoy, along with blankets and chairs.
Grand Rapids Beer Tours will be hosting tours to select breweries so people can try the tree beers without having to drive.
Fans of experimental and barrel-aged beers will find a lot to like on this year's list of tree-themed beers. The breweries participating in the project include:
• B.O.B.’s Brewery, "Tangerine Trees," Fruited Wit. • Brewery Vivant, "Devastation," Oak Aged Double IPA. • Cellar Brewing Company, "Apple Ridge IPA," Fruited IPA. • Crankers Brewery, "Kangaroo Rodeo Barrel," Aged Brown Ale. • EB Coffee & Pub, "Oaked Melon Saison," Red Oak Saison. • Elk Brewing, "Sassafras Brown," Sassafras Brown. • Founders Brewing, "Lil' Saplin'," Young Barrel Aged Scotch Ale with Additional Oak. • Grand Rapids Brewing Co., "Bonita Applebrown," Smoked Brown Porter with Apple. • Gravel Bottom Craft Brewery & Supply, "Cedarino," Cedar Planked Pale Ale. • Harmony Brewing Company, "Sumac Attack," Sumac Hefeweizen. • The Hideout Brewing Company, "Sticky TreeHugger," Maple Oak Pilsner. • HopCat, "Naughty Nicodemus," Cucumber Juniper Lime Gruit. • Jaden James Brewery, "Smoke on the Water," Smoked Marzen. • The Mitten Brewing Co., "Oak Aged Pine Tar DIPA," DIPA (week 1) and "Cherry Oaked Wee Heavy," Wee Heavy (week 2). • O'Connor's Homebrew Supply, "Smokin' Red Wood Scotch Ale," Extract Kit. • Osgood Brewing, "Spruce Almighty," Spruce Tip Black IPA. • Perrin Brewing Co., "Hopwood," Oak Aged Double-IPA. • Pike 51 Brewing, "Beer That Shall Not Be Named," Maple Almond Belgian Brown Ale. • Rockford Brewing Co., "Beechwood Brown," Smoked Oatmeal Brown. • Schmohz Brewery, "Barrel Aged Kiss My Scottish Arse," Smoked Scottish Ale. • White Flame Brewing Co., "Nut Job," Black Walnut Ale. • The Peoples Cider Co., "Cherry Tree Cyser," Cherry Cyser.

That sounds like a fun event, I bet there'll be a huge turnout. What a fantastic way to increase public awareness and raise money for urban forestry at the same time. Have fun! You're going, right?

I can't make the kick-off since I will still be working but we will be hitting several of the breweries during the event and I am going to try to talk DH into going to the movie. I love Bob & Doug!
Interesting. I live in W. MI and this is the first I have heard of this. I won't be able to make the kick off (I don't have daycare on Friday so my sis is watching DD only until 1:00). I don't think it would be socially acceptable to bring a 3 year old to a beer event.
HopCat is the best (fantastic beer selection)! I also like Crankers (kind of a weird atmosphere), Founders, and Perrin when I have time.

Psh sure it is, just don't give the kid too much beer

You live in W MI?!?!? How did I not know this? Are there any other "west-siders" on here? (I would love to have a GBCN GTG since it doesn't seem like there is a critical mass of W MI people on any one board but most of the posters I know that are in MI are on the east side or up north.)
And I hadn't heard of it either until I read the article this morning online.

Ha! I do! I always thought you were on the East side.

I wanted to elaborate more on this, and that I also thought most GBCNers were from the East side. I'd totally do a GTG.
