I've seen a few documentaries--can't remember what they were called--about it and it's so terrifying. One of the documentaries I watched had interviews with a few of the survivors. According to the survivors, a lot of them were forced to drink the poison, or take the shot, against their will.

Oh yeah, what they initially called a mass suicide was later proven to be 50/50 suicide/murder.
The parents who knowingly made their kids drink the kool-aide? I can't even.
Jim Jones' son was one of the survivors. His interviews are heartbreaking and fascinating at the same time.

What's so heartbreaking to me is that so many of them really believed the world was so horrible, they and their children would be better off dead. A big deal was made about the mixed-race children and relationships. One of the survivors of the plane attack chose to leave his son behind, on the belief he would face too much discrimination in the US.

Yep.
I saw a really interesting documentary about cult leaders and the people who end up following them. It's terrifying to think that someone would be SO desperate that they would take their whole family to another CONTINENT and continue to blindly follow someone who was out of his MIND on drugs and power.

I think we might have watched the same documentaries.

He was one of the survivors because he wasn't in Guyana at the time.

Yes he was. He wasn't in Jonestown, but he was in Guyana.
Jim Jones Jr., Jones' son, then 18, wasn't in Jonestown on the day of the mass murder-suicide. He was 150 miles away in Georgetown, Guyana, playing in a basketball tournament. "My father radioed to me that they were 'visiting Ms. Frazier,' which was code for committing suicide," he says. "I argued with him. I said: 'Isn't there another way? Can't we do something else?' My father told us to find knives, piano wire, poison if we were able to find it, and commit suicide."

I've seen the "Paradise Lost" documentary/re-enactment. All I knew of Jonestown prior to watching was the whole cult/mass suicide aspect. After watching, I couldn't shake the images for days.
Also since watching, I don't take the term "drinking the kool-aid" lightly and will sometimes explain to people how horrible it really was and offensive the term can be.
When I was only nine or ten weeks post partum with my first Oprah had a story on Jonestown. She played audio tapes of the actual suicides. The children crying and screaming put me over the edge. I couldn't sleep for days after that. I should have written a letter to Harpo Studios complaining since it seems inappropriate to air such awful stuff.
I don't think I could stand to watch the documentaries.

CNN did a documentary on it that I have seen a few times. I can still hear Jim Jones' voice telling everyone to drink their drinks, and the footage of all the bodies. So horrifying.
