I feel your pain. I'm starting Calc 1 this semester after a) dropping out of high school without doing past tenth grade math, and b) taking Algebra and Trig online a year ago (I did get an A and a B, but I don't remember ANYTHING). And I need it for Biostatistics : / I'm going to fail all the things.
OMG, that is written so badly. Just read the part at the end that says to evaluate directly.
What they're basically saying is if the P(x) function equaled 5 (if solved directly), and the P(c) function equaled 3 (if solved directly), then P(x)-P(c) = 2.
I feel you SO HARD. I worked my ass off last semester and pulled an A in brief calculus. But now I'm doing Math for Business analysis and then statistics next semester and I will finally be done with math, but some 22 more classes to go for my bachelor's degree.
I looked at my book and thought, "Um. I'm in trouble."
I'll join! I totally geek out over this stuff, and I actually do occasionally use it for work, which puts me in the minority for sure. Granted, I use excel sheets to solve these kinds of things.
Ok skip that confusing shit in the middle, just plug in 1 for x. At least that's my take away...no wonder I'm only an average student, I always go for the short cut so that I can start drinking sooner.
Cheers!
My degree is in math - and I think the middle part is stupid & more confusing than it needs to be.
Maybe it's the way it's worded. I DON'T LIKE IT.
Agreed. I also have a BA in math and the middle part is poorly worded. Just substitute 1 in the equation where it says x and solve.
