Hey! (maybe lucky7707 rings more of a bell..? idk if you guy's will remember me!) Life got crazy busy for me last year and I sort of lost track of the boards here. I lurked around xmas to see all the great exchange ornaments, but I didn't join in b/c I didn't want to disappoint anyone.
SOOOOOO.. I quit my real job a while ago & I've been able to start a small hobby business selling things that I sew. I've had friends buy things from me, but usually fairly simple things under $30.
Now I've got a friend who asked me to make her halloween costume for her and her bf. her inspiration
I know she doesn't have a lot of disposable income, so I've tried showing her some RTW options online. The first cost ~$60 and 'looked cheap', the second ~$120 and was 'too expensive'. I showed her different fabric types online so she could see the cost per yard and told her I'd have to buy at least 10 yards. Is there a nice way for me to tell her that even if I could get the material for what she wants for under $100, I'm not doing it for free? I like her and I'm alright with giving her a deal, but it would take me a lot of time to do this project right & that's time I can't spend making other things.
(I still haven't started thinking about MY costume.. yikes.)
*ETA bonus pics of a jumper I just finished for my niece. kind of loosely Elsa inspired, made w/ scraps from a dress i made myself. The back has a sheer glittery overlay on the bodice to imitate a cape.
You should just be honest and tell her what the materials cost plus your labor and if it's out of her budget, she can go another route. A friend would understand that your time is valuable.
i know this is the reasonable answer.. i guess i'm just feeling bad about telling her no b/c today is her birthday. lol.

Tell her she should think about going as the Khaleesi. Far less fabric.
Or she could go as Shae, then you'd merely have to drape a few yards around her person. But if she really wants to go as Cersei then she's going to need to need some Lannister gold. (and omg, her bf wants to go as Jaime? Tell me you're joking.)

yeah.. totally not joking. I don't watch GOT, so I didn't realize that this was icky until yesterday. :^)
I saw my friend last night and told her I can't do what she wants for the price she wants to pay, so she should really consider some of the RTW options we looked at.
