Annually, I check unclaimed property for all of the states I have lived in. This is a great way to check if money is owed to you. If you're not familiar with it, I thought I'd share.
Google: unclaimed property search and the state name. You should be looking on a government, safe site. There are advertised sites that will check multiple states for you. I prefer the official state sites as the other may collect a finders fee.
Hint: check married and maiden names in your search
What is unclaimed property? www.unclaimed.org/what/ In a nutshell, money a company owes you and has tried to contact you (may look like junk mail, newspaper ad, no fwd address, etc...). When you cannot be found the company must turn the money over to the state. The state (comptroller/treasurer) list the owners on their website in efforts to find you.
Laws vary state by state to collect the money. One required me to complete an online form. Another requested I send in a copy of my drivers license with a hard copy form. There should be no additional cost to you.
This is legit, I promise.
In the past, I have been owed money for utility deposits, over payment on accounts,etc...
I've been checking this because when I moved out of my apartment in VA, I never got the security deposit back. About 2 months after we moved, the apartment complex was bought out by a different owner, we got the run around, and eventually just kind of dropped it. I wonder whatever happened to my $500

Didn't find any for me but I think I found some for T! It's under $100 but hey I'll take whatever it is. Trying to verify his address when he lived at that zip code so I can get it.
Weird. When I checked this morning, nothing came up. I checked again (to see if XH had anything) so I searched just by last name and I found one in my name from my old bank. $37! Wooo!
Thanks - $38.16 total from two different places for me and I found several for my H's grandmother but I'm going to have to get some info from her to prove them.
