In my humble opinion, since I own a lot (maybe too much) Hello Kitty stuff, I think she's a kitty. I also believe, she's along the same lines of Goofy. You know how for a while there was the debate if Goofy was really a dog but he doesn't act like Pluto? I feel that way about Hello Kitty. She's a cat but not in the traditional sense.

My guess is that this is a ploy by the marketers of Hello Kitty to revive interest in their product. I don't believe Hello Kitty is as popular as it was a few years back, and so this is just their way of bringing sales back up.
