If you sign up for emails from those companies, you should be made aware of any sales, discounts, etc. If you want to stop receiving paper catalogs, you can use a free service like Paper Karma. Just google them.
I always call to be removed. When I do place an order online from a company I leave the comment "do not add me to mailing list. Do not sell or rent my name."
They're wasteful. And they're also very effective on me, so I spend a lot less if I just seek out what I want when I need it.
I do not get any catalogs. When we moved into our house, we received all of the previous owner's catalogs (the post office won't forward them.) I submitted no less than 20 requests to have my address removed from mailing lists. It's so incredibly wasteful.
I LOVE catalogs! I do go through them and will save them all up for an afternoon of "window shopping". I love to save the summer ones to go through in the middle of winter when I am getting wishful for summer. I moved recently and can't wait for all mine to catch up to my new address.
Now if I could just opt out of the weekly newspaper crap (ads) that comes and I never go through.

I call to cancel THE MOMENT I receive a catalog of any kind. I hate them, I don't shop that way. I shop online only and it annoys the piss out of me that online purchases always initiate an avalanche of catalogs. They go straight into the recycling bin. The clutter would BURY me if I didn't get rid of them immediately.

Ask at your post office about the weekly circulars. I got off of those lists 5 or so years ago and it's great. I think they gave me a number for one of the local newspapers that was who was distributing them, but I don't remember for sure.

I like them, but I am careful to edit them (by unsubscribing) to the ones I will actually look at and enjoy/possibly would buy from. I go through them, mark anything I might want, then go online and add those items to the appropriate amazon wishlist, then recycle the catalog. I can process through them quickly and unless I've really slacked, I don't accumulate them.
I hope they hook you up @bluesky! I hate junk mail so much. Mail used to pile up and important stuff wouldn't get noticed. I declared war and now we get 0-3 pieces of mail a day. Some credit card and cable offers have crept back in, but it's such an improvement.
