I'm worried about my dad (stomach flu?) *Updated again

I just wanted to say that since last Monday I've had 2 separate stomach bugs. One I recovered from fairly quickly, but this 2nd one has been horrible and 4 days later my stomach is just starting to tolerate food again. I was debating whether to go get IV fluids last night, but seem to be coming out of it finally. So, it could just be 2 bugs in quick succession and hopefully IV fluids will help him start feeling better!

There is a large stomach bug outbreak that is pretty nasty. Maybe that's it?

I had gastroenteritis for over a week a few months ago. TMI, but I had so much diarrhea that I really don't know how anything was still coming out of me because I wasn't eating for a week. I've only been sick about 4 times in my life and that had me down and out for a good 2 weeks and I didn't feel like myself for about a month. So yes, it could just be gastroenteritis. I hope he goes to the ER and they're able to help and it's nothing serious.

I would have them run blood work and just see if there is anything else going on. Before I met H, he was incredibly sick with a nasty bacterial infection. He had gone to the ER due to high fever, they say it's a virus go home. He goes back because he is only getting worse to have a different doctor look at his blood work and note his white blood cell count was really high.

My point is, if someone is not getting better, don't be afraid to get more opinions.

I hope he feel better soon! Can he suck on an ice cube? I do this when sick because it allows me to get water very, very slowly.

Its so hard watching out parents get older and not bounce back like they used to.

Hopefully some IV fluids, gatorade and other clear liquids, and some rest is just what the Dr ordered.

my dad just went through something similar. it was a bacterial infection, not viral. he needed antibiotics.

thanks for posting this, I will bring it up.  He's supposed to be in court all day tomorrow but I don't know how that's really do-able.  :/

my dad was having diarrhea 12-15 times a day. he passed out ON the toilet from dehydration.  it was a 5 day hospital stay til they got things under control (the first three were waiting for the stool culture results).

I'm totally nosy and like science, so tell me to mind my own business, but was it c-diff?

ETA: My original lost didn't sound the way I intended. First, I'm sorry your dad had to go through that and am glad he's okay. Second I work with some data on c-diff and when I saw the amount of diarrhea he was having, that was my first though. Sorry, if it came of kind of callous, as it wasn't my intent.

when he went to the ER, his potassium was so low they were concerned he would have a heart attack (he's had two already). If he goes back, they should do the bloodwork to check for this.

I had the same thing wandering did and so did DH. It sucked. DS had it too but he puked more and was fine in four days.

Tell him not to go to Urgent Care if he is still sick because they will probably send him to the ER. So save time and go straight to the ER and let them figure out what is going on, but dehydration can mess your body in a dangerous way. If he can try and keep down Gatorade that would be a good start..

I'm just catching up with this post and oh man, that sounds brutal. I hope it is just a virus. I'm glad nothing came up on the CT scan though, because that probably rules out a bunch of serious stuff. Hope they find something that helps soon!
