Framing is insane. Our ketubah is huge and when we got it framed I thought I was going to die of shock. We've had a few things framed since then and it doesn't hurt quite as much when you know how bad it will be.
I'd ask for a discount of some sort because you are doing so many pieces. I know the frame place my MIL takes her stuff to gives her a freebie every so often because she is constantly getting stuff done there. Won't hurt to ask!
ETA: I see that you asked at Michaels. Go to a framing shop and see what they can do for you.
I feel you. I went to Michaels last year to get a quote for custom framing of one large print for DD's nursery. It was a vintage Ferris wheel print from Etsy. After a 50% off coupon, it was gonna be like $675. Lollll, no.
So I found an ugly wooden poster frame, painted it up, and used that. For $35.
I don't know if this is even an option or how cheap it would be, but what about somewhere like michaels or Joanne's fabric doing it? They always have coupons and sales.
This was the 65% off sale price, at Michael's. Lololololol.

Yeah, unfortunately that price does not surprise me. It still sucks though. Custom framing is mad expensive. It was almost $400 to get one of our (larger) wedding pictures framed.
When you said 35 pieces I didn't have to read further. I would've been scared to even get a quote.
Me too. Right off the bat I guessed about $3500.
Sorry pantsparty Hope you can figure something else out.
I guessed between $6000 and $7500 as a starting point.
I can't remember the last time I framed something for less than $150. And that was without archival glass, or a higher end frame. Plus the girl wo does my framing is my niece's BFF who does it as a side business when she gets the time. Last piece- some sheet music in a mat and custom frame cost $150 and took about 18 months because I said "no hurry".
Is there a "you-frame-it" place near you? We have this place- they show you how and the price is cheaper-

Michael's is a huge rip off. Go local if you can find one. I had two full size flags done with archival glass for my brother for less than what Michael's quoted me for one.
I just had four portraits framed for work and it was $2500. They were large (20 x 30), but still, for 35 pieces that sounds cheap to me.
I would not be going the custom route for etsy stuff, though.
65% off, JENNY!!!!!!
I can't math, but I guess this means it's actually a $14,000 project.
I need a bad decisions time machine.
Check out FrameUsa too. They have standard sizes of all of their frames, but also offer custom sizes which are shipped already assembled. They also offer mats with whatever size opening you want from the MatDesigners tab at the top. It all ships together (so no separate s/h fees) and they will send you mat samples so you can check colors. I did our hallway gallery with them, and a wall in our office.
Oh, also, this is one reason why the wall behind our couch has looked like this since we moved in. I'm all go big or...do nothing at all.
(Please note the yellow plastic pirate on the table. L told me "pirates wear shorts but not shirts because it's hot and they don't want splinters in their hineys." Wtf, kid).
This is an iPhone panaromic photo (so wonky) of our basement wall. 42 frames. I can't imagine what it would have cost to do custom framing but I would have loved to have done it. As it was it cost a lot, but not nearly as much as your quite.
