I generally love the contrast of old with modern, but only when it's done consistently throughout the home. When we were buying houses, places that had been reno'd with varying styles were typically removed from the list. I want the feeling that someone considered the style and kept it consistent throughout the house's lifetime.
One other question: would you have enough storage with a floating vanity?

I agree that it could work if there are other modern touches mixed in throughout the rest of your home. I do think it would look off to have one modern bathroom in an otherwise traditional home.
Your kitchen is Ikea though, right? How would this bathroom compare with that?
This is my biggest issue with floating vanities. Most of them have next to no storage, and most people have more products to store in the bathroom than they realize. I would avoid them for that reason alone, though I don't love the look either unless they are in a really modern loft or something like that.

I do not think a floating vanity would go well with your home. The craftsman style, or something closer to it, I think, is better suited to those homes.
I'd check out open houses in your area to see what people have commonly done during a reno.
I personally do not like to cross styles much. You can find some modern pieces that could mix well but a free-floating vanity might be too modern for the house style.
I have a Cape Cod style house and it's PB/beachy. We found a vanity from Home Decoratora Collection. There is a gap between the floor and vanity but it was large enough to for the hose to the vacuum.
I don't mind modern(ish) bathrooms in traditional houses, but I'm not a fan of floating vanities in general.
We actually have Ikea vanities in our bathroom (our house is a 40's bungalow style, so it's a bit modern compared to the rest of the house). We opted to get two smaller vanities put in instead of one big one. I really like it, personally, because it has a lot of storage space and it's nice to have our own separate mirrors/medicine cabinets They also stand high enough that it's very easy to vacuum under them (roomba fits in there).

I would not. I would also hire professional movers to bring in the vanity. We had a huge armoire I never thought would get up the stairs and they did it. I was so stressed though that I left the house.
I remind everyone doing a new bathroom to install medicine cabinets. I missed them in our house and it makes me crazy.
I would strive to match your kitchen. Would it be possible to have your contractor modify a furniture looking by adding trim at the bottom that would fill the gap? I also shudder at the idea of what would get trapped under there. Nasty!
I just hate floating vanities in general (in any house) so I would say no. I like the idea of a furniture style vanity. We have a furniture style kitchen island and it really isn't a big deal to clean under it. I run the broom under there once a week and it's nbd.
What about two pedastal sinks with some sort of antique sideboard or hutch between?
I was thinking along these lines as well. They have the tops also that look like pedestal sinks with a chrome base with bars and sometimes a shelf that could have baskets with storage. It would be much more open and allow for easier cleaning.
Or is there a way to make a custom piece that exactly fits in the spot?
