Also, I think @helenabonhamcarter is really on to something with the oxfords.
Heels are fucking terrible for your feet.
But the reason people find ballet flats uncomfortable is because they are garbage with no support. And unfortunately, there are very few shoe makers who make a shoe with support that has any modicum of style.
The only flats I have found that I can wear that don't hurt my feet, are made by Me Too. They are cushion-y and come in wide widths so my toes can get the room they need without me having to buy a 1/2 size larger and then dealing with the shoe becoming too big once it's broken in, and my foot moving around in it.
I love this brand. You can always find them at Nordstrom Rack and they are really comfy.
I am dealing with some wicked plantar fasciitis right now. I have to wear heels. I love all my flats with my whole heart and I want some oxfords so bad, but a. the PF and b. I haven't been able to find a pair I really love.

I never ever wear heels to work anymore. I teach, so it's not a super dressy environment anyway. But being on my feet all day, I am in so much pain if I wear heels. I typically only wear them for things like Parent Night/Open House with a sheath dress or something.
I don't understand the love for scrunch shoes. I've tried those and tons of others and they scrunch my foot.
I do have 2 pairs of Payless flats that are tolerable, but again with the no support so I can't wear them more than 2 days in a row.
I wear a 2E shoe width. All my shoes come from Zappos, because haha that size will ever be in a store. I broke my left foot and it never healed right. I have feet, knee and back issues.
I will never wear fashionable shoes, and I'm ok with that. I'm hoping the flats love sticks around for a long time though. I need the trends to come to me!!!

I get that people are complaining about flats having no support, but do you really find heels supportive? I can't wear heels because they put too much pressure on my forefoot, but I never found they offered actual arch support. I think it's just an illusion because your foot is angled. I've never had a doctor tell me I should wear heels, so unsupportive or not, I can't imagine flats are worse for you.
I wear knee highs. I hardly ever wear anything but full length pants with anything other than tennis shoes or sandals so it works. I've never had one of those sock things work since I wear an 11 and they go up to a 9

Agreed. Also, the idea that wedges are more comfortable is a damned lie. I'll take heels over wedges like all of the time.

I can do a low wedge occasionally (like 2-3 days/week, at the office only, no walking beyond the adjacent office buildings), but that's because my issue is the area near the ball of my foot. The more angled the shoe, the more pressure gets put on the forefoot.
Flats are tough for me, too, because I'm supposed to have a relatively hard sole. Super bendable shoes allow too much pressure in the forefoot area. And let me tell you, the options for hard-soled flats are...not pretty.

Plantar's Fascitis makes them pretty uncomfortable too.

I don't wear 4 inch heels, so it's a matter of perspective. LOL But, flats with no arch support hurt my knees. I tend to prefer heels that are about 2.5 inches in height. Also, I'm a stickler for cushioned shoes. If it's not cushioned, I won't buy them. If they hurt my feet, I won't wear them again. Over the years, I've managed to find a couple of brands of heels - Gianni Bini and Antonio Melani in Dillards - that don't hurt my feet. I've given up Nine West because they just don't work. Also, White House Black Market has good shoes. I purchased a pair of white platform heels several years ago that are by far a favorite because of the padding.
HBC - on wedges - I don't do high wedges. I prefer mid-heels. So, it's going to be a 2 inch wedge.

I'm referring mostly to shows like WNTW where people complain that heels hurt their feet, are difficult to walk in, or are overall uncomfortable and people say, oh, just wear wedges as if that's the cure all.

Me too. I started wearing my Danskos religiously, even though they're not as cute in summer as my Saltwater sandals, and there was a huge improvement. Plus the annoying night boot helps.
