I have been concerned about the amount of hair loss I have since going natural. I'd say for more than 2 yrs now. When I had a relaxer it wasn't a problem. It has been an issue since before DD2 and then after I thought maybe it would sort itself out but she is 10 mos now and it still comes out in clumps when I wash.
I just had my horomone levels checked at the gyne because of it and he said it's all fine. I don't want to go down the Google/WebMD rabbit hole because I won't sleep at night.
I went to a dermatologist, but he turned out to be a homeopathic-type and wanted to do something called mesiotherapy and I said "no, thanks" to that. I first want to know what the cause is, as well.
Anyone one experience hair loss? Could it be alopecia (I don't know what that is, but I remember the commercials)? For awhile it wasn't really noticeable, but I would say it's noticeably thinning at the edges, even though I don't pull my hair back tight. That's likely where the loss is coming from?
I thought he did, but I just re-checked the sheet and I think it was mostly estrogen, testosterone, etc.... post-pregnancy levels. I would have just assumed that was the first thing, but I guess I have to go to my general practioner and ask again.
ETA: and I'm reading that thyroid issues and adrenal issues aren't always linked, so yeah, I'll ask my general about it.
I had a real problem with hair loss when I was going through all my issues, plus losing weight. Up your protein. Like, double it. That helped me, along with some shampoo/conditioner that might be woo.

So I will say that since going natural I noticeably lose a lot more hair. However, my hair is very kinky and since I don't comb or detangle it throughout the week, it all comes out at once in the shower when I detangle. Sometimes it freaks me, but I haven't noticed a lot more thinning. I'd say I lose about a fist full of hair each week.
Is your hair definitely thinning? How far postpartum are you?

This, too. I've been leaving my hair curly in this humidity (plus, I'm just lazy like that) and I have to remind myself that what comes out in the shower is a couple days worth of normal hair shedding.

I went through a phase when I was really concerned about hair loss too, around 30 yrs old. Like someone else in this thread, I had really thick hair as a teen, and now I have much thinner hair. I always thought it had to do with a course of Accutane I took but I really don't know. Maybe it's a normal age related thing to have hair really thin out at some point. Or maybe it's a hormonal thing, in my case affected by meds and in others by pregnancy? (I've never been pregnant.) It did slow down after awhile. I still shed more than other people, but I always have, even as a teen, and I also have hair and nails that grow a lot faster than other people, so I'm not worried about it anymore.
Oh yes ditto the protein thing, if yours is low. I have a coworker who went through weight loss surgery and her hair is thinning horribly for lack of protein so she's upping it a lot.
Though I have to say thinning on the edges to me makes me still lean towards post partum-type catch up. It seems that's where many women notice it PP (as opposed to a bald spot elsewhere).

My dd is 11 months and my edges are still suffering. The same thing happened when I had my fist child. I do think I loose/detangle a great deal of hair as a natural but it doesn't seem like I am missing hair if that makes sense. Are you still taking your prenatals?
I was having issues but my thyroid was fine. She ran a bunch of iron tests and holy moly I as really low. She said iron needs to be in the in the 80s to get full hair growth. I was like 11. Heh
Oh, I do know I have really low iron and I probably don't eat enough protein. So much information here! I'll have to get on this.

The edges on my right side were pretty thin when I still relaxed my hair. They are still much thinner than the left, but it's gotten better since I went natural. My iron has always been on the low side, and that might have something to do with it in my case.
