So, for the first time in my life I'm working out 5 days a week (woohoo), but that means washing my hair pretty much every day and it's not working well for my hair. I stopped using shampoo a year ago and only use conditioner as it is (and without it I can't get a comb or even my fingers through my hair), but my hair is getting brittle and starting to break from even using just conditioner daily. It seems like every 2-3 days would work better. But I sweat like crazy when I work out, so I need to shower and need to do something to remove the sweat from my hair without drying it out. Any suggestions on how I can protect my hair without stinking all the time?
Sometimes I can use the blow dryer at a lower setting to dry up some of the sweat and oil. Is it the conditioning or is it breaking because you have rubber bands or elastics in it?
Oh, I'm not sure! I've never had my hair break before, but I pretty much always wear it in a ponytail. I use the "ouchless" hair ties instead of rubber, but I wonder if that's part of the issue. I might try the blow dryer. Thanks!

I don't shampoo after a land workout, just rinse and maybe conditioner. I occasionally use Suave dry shampoo. There are other brands out there, but I'm cheap and that one works well enough for me.
Could you try just rinsing your hair out with plain water after a workout?
What about changing conditioner? I use the Kirkland stuff from costco that's sulfate free or whatever and I like it.

I always use a clip rather than any type of band because I find clips to be much easier on my hair.
I workout 6 days a week. I sweat a lot. I only co-wash twice a week. My hair doesn't stink. I'd see how it goes with co-washing every other day or less. If you head is attracting flies, then switch it up.

Oooh, some great ideas, thanks! I'll try a clip instead of a tie and dry shampoo and use a shower cap while showering to keep my hair dry!
I actually just switched up my conditioner for one that seems to be making my curls look good, so I'll try just wetting less frequently and avoiding ties for now and see if that works!
I pile my hair on top of my head when I shower and the roots get a little damp but not actually soaked and then I blow the roots dry. This is enough to get some of the sweat out without washing it. I also use dry shampoo to help absorb oil.
I also schedule my work out days (or did when I was actively running) so that the worst days are day I would wash my hair anyway - long runs on Sunday, for example, running with the stroller after work on a Wed (and then I wouldn't wash it that Thursday etc)
Be careful if you use hair pins--for a while I was using those for workouts and they were making my hair break off. I actually like using a bandana over my hair to keep the sweat off my face and hair out of the way (with hair otherwise pulled back)
I have probably tried nearly every brand of dry shampoo. Suave is overall pretty much the best. It smells about the best too. If your hair is dark, it will give it a grey cast.
For dark hair, try Batiste for dark hair. It's not quite as cheap, but still under $10 which is good for dry shampoo. It works well and the smell is tolerable.

Is the Batiste available most places? I have very dark hair so it sounds like it would probably be a better bet than Suave for me.

I know Ulta and Amazon have it--not sure if Target, Walgreens, etc do.
