November wedding 3.30 Catholic ceremony Reception immediately following (although there is a standard 1.5 hour delay in these parts)
"Black tie invited"
What does that mean. What the heck does a chick wear? Feels to early for full length dress plus that is, uh, not the culture of the area. But, these are people with lots of money and the bride is a pageant girl with a flair for drama.

Sounds like "black tie optional" which is common in my area. I'd go with a nice, LBD but one that isn't necessarily long. Just fancier than maybe your average wedding.

Black tie invited means you can wear a long dress and your short dress should be pretty formal.
I had a fancy wedding at that same time but it was in January so it was dark out really early. Maybe that makes it better? ETA It makes it better in my mind, lol.
