I'm not shaming anyone for using them. The opposite actually. H has been talking about getting a DVD player for car trips. Then he decided maybe we just need an iPad or tablet so she could do more with it. We don't have an iPad. I try not to let her use my phone, but she keeps telling me to ask santa for a "tem-poo-ter" for her. I will probably be purchasing MYSELF an iPad mini in November, partially for school use.
Do we get her a tablet? Do your kids use a tablet? I know a lot of them do. It could maybe be a grandparent present. I just can't see spending so much on something for a 2 year old, but I wouldn't really want her using mine on a regular basis. Maybe if we limited it to just trips.
I'm just talking out my ass here because I'm not even sure what I want to hear. So just tell me about your kid and technology.
I have Ada use my iPad for car trips and occasionally at home. I might buy her her own in a few years, or I will give her this one and get a new one for myself. At this age I don't want her using it a lot so it's easier that she knows this is mine and sometimes I let her use it.

Natalie has a Nabi Jr. The Nick Jr one. It came preloaded with a lot of apps which was nice. I know some people don't like that, though. She likes it and it is very toddler friendly.
Max uses my iPad and my old iPhone 4S. The iPad only comes out on long car trips or planes. The phone is at night after Theo is down and I can play alphabet apps with him or he will watch Super Why. It's amazing how quickly he picked up the ability to use both.
I probably wouldn't spend the money on an iPad for a toddler, but if I could get one second hand or reuse an old device, I would. Max is learning so much from using technology.
we have an ipad and i have a phone. He doesnt use my phone ever, I never put his apps on it (intentionally) and he doesnt know it can do that stuff. I like it that way.
We have an ipad that he watches shows on (Pbs kids) and does some apps but not a ton of games yet. he says it's his ipad but it's really H's birthday gift from a few years ago.
Elliot uses an iPad on the plane, long car trips, and occasionally when H has his tutor in the house and I really need to keep E occupied and quiet, lol. He does some apps/games like puzzles, preschool monkey lunchbox, matching games, etc. and we put movies on it for plane rides. I am ashamed to admit he has also learned how to play Plants vs Zombies from his brother.
We travel a lot so it's important for us. We have 4 iPads though (I know, I know) so we just loaded up our old ones and let the kids use those when they need them. We are debating having one be designated Henry's "own" and letting him download music, etc. but he is 7. I didn't want him having anything that expensive previously.

Well MH told me that if I want, I'll be getting an iPad for Christmas. Then we will each have an iPad, plus a Kindle. A will probably end up with that. He knows how to use it, we can lock it so he doesn't buy anything. Then we can also put any apps for him on there too instead of him trying to get on our tablets. It's nothing that I ever thought I would be considering yet, but I will need an iPad for my new job, and there will be major restrictions for him with the Kindle. FFC alert: Plus, it may be used as a bargaining tool with him if needed
Logan uses my iPad a lot. He has a lot of games and can watch pbs and Disney Jr episodes. I wouldn't buy him his own iPad, but H is talking about getting him a cheaper tablet of his own. It's a life saver on longer car trips, family dinners at non kid friendly homes, and in waiting rooms.
She can use my iPad as a special treat, but she knows that it is mine. She will occasionally play with my iPhone also. MIL introduced her to the iPhone, so now she loves it. Grrrrr! We also have a DVD player in the car, but we only use it for trips that are 2 hours or more. We drive 1-1.5 hours all the time, so I don't want her getting too used to it.
We wouldn't survive in the car if she didn't watch movies on the iPad.
How do you keep her from pausing/closing the movie? Whenever I give C the iPad, he can't resist pushing the home button or the little button on top. He also touches exciting things on the screen and accidentally pauses videos every seven seconds.

Put it in guided access- you press the home button 3 times. Then they can't get out of the app or movie.
We also have a holder thing that attaches it to the headrest. (Don't lecture me on how it's unsafe.)

we have a case that hangs from the headrest. he can't reach it! You can also set guided access

We bought her a Kurio on super clearance for her birthday and it sucks. We upgraded our phones and gave her my iPhone 4 and she gets way more use out of that. So I vote REAL tablet, not kid one. So many more options for apps and such.

I was also going to suggest guided access. It was a life saver when all she wanted to do was press the home button. We still use is sometimes because she likes to blast the volume sometimes.

I promise I will never lecture anyone about carseat safety.

Wouldn't that be more safe than having your kid hold the iPad? We have Ada hold it and in an accident nothing at all would keep it from flying around.
We have an iPad but she is pretty much the only one that uses it, DH and I just use our phones or computers. She watches shows and movies on it mostly but she has a few games too. She also has a nabi jr which is cool it has a lot of apps for learning. Of course she prefers the iPad prob just bc she can watch her shows on it.

We have a kindle, iPad and tablet. I have his shows downloaded on the kindle and attach it to the headrest for road trips because I prefer the iPad for whatever I may need to do. He uses the iPad for longer family dinners in restaurant bc i have more apps for him. I justify it because almost all are educational games. I also have a lot of his books on the kindle and it works great when traveling.
We have our old iPads loaded with kid friendly apps and movies/shows. dD gets to use it for trips and the occasional treat. DD uses it more for games, reading aps and books. I see no big issue with it unless there is an impact on behavior or performance in school etc.

We have the kindle and it is now mostly Mel's. You ca. Set it up in freetime so they can have limited video time, but can read and play with apps. I really love it. It's also much cheaper than an iPad and has just as much in the App Store and it can grow with them since it's a great ereader.
Tempootur is so cute! H uses our iPad to watch netflix. It's amazing. We have a DVD player that we pull out for long car trips only (60 mins or more). Both have been life savers in the moments we need them.
J has a $60 cheapie android one. I wish we had spent more and gotten a better one because it kind of sucks. But I let him use it not too often, and it's been a lifesaver at work. I think they can benefit a lot from them, especially since there are sooo many educational apps.
Andrew uses an ipad heavily during his therapy, both for skills and as a reward. We use it for long travel. We also use it during Auburn football games, so DH and I can watch with fewer distractions. Honestly, if this kid could play Hooked on Phonics for the rest of his life, he'd be psyched.
