I mentioned once that the school I work for has mice. Well I was hoping they would fix the issue over the summer and they haven't. There's a trap near the heater about 5ft from my desk and when I came to work this morning there was a dead mouse in it. I also found a few droppings in my supply room last week (in random bins). So I decided to Google and found that there are viruses that can be transmitted to an unborn baby even just from breathing around mice??? I am so scared and I feel trapped.
Has anyone dealt with this while pregnant? Last year it was gross but now I'm officially scared. If I Clorox wipe my desk area every morning and wash my hands frequently will this be ok? Last time I brought it up I remember TrudyCampbell mentioned you dealt with this? I emailed my principal, should I call my OB? I am afraid to stir up dust in my supply room or touch anything. I will try to respond as much as I can but this is my only break today.

Ahhhh, I'm so sorry. I have serious PTSD from our mice infestation. I had scared myself from googling and when I brought it up to my OB she was not phased by it at all. She basically said everyone in NYC has had a mouse problem and it is not something I should even think about. We had a SERIOUS problem though. It was so so so so so much worse than I can even discuss, lol. I think if you do what you said and wipe everything and wash your hands then that's all you can do. Ask your OB for reassurance, but I think you're fine!

Thanks so much for this, it makes me feel a lot better. Parasites and freaky viruses are my biggest fear so this is really hard. I hate the feeling of not having control and I have to be here (you had a similar situation) I think I'll call my OB just to check in, like you said.
We moved out of our last, gorgeous apartment when I was none months pregnant because there was a huge mouse (and black mold) problem that the landlord wouldn't do anything about.
My midwife said the same thing as Trudy's OB - basically, every pregnant woman in NY will deal with mouse exposure, and it's no big deal. She told me just to wash my hands well if I came into contact with poop.

Thanks so much for this. Black mold is scary too! Luckily I have a sink right in my room to use.
We had mice at my work when I was pregnant with A. It was gross but I was told to basically wash my hands a lot and avoid sweeping, or cleaning, places that might have mice droppings. I guess if you sweep the floor the mice droppings can get into the dust and into the air and you breathe it in and if the mouse has the disease you could technically get it. So hopefully you have a custodian that will be doing the cleaning for you and it should all be fine!

That's what I was thinking too, I was planning on totally cleaning and organizing my supply closet this year but I'm going to wait till next year just to be safe. So to get the disease from the air the poop or urine has to be stirred up or disturbed right? I think I'm going to ask the custodians to clean out my heat registers before fall because that's where the mice seem to travel from place to place and I don't want dusty poop blowing in my room, gross. They should probably clean them all actually for everyone's sake.
There were mice in my school when I was pregnant with both kids. It is gross, but the advice was given was the same thing that everyone else said. Sorry you have to deal with this!
I don't have any experience or advice but wanted to say sorry you are dealing with this! I would be nervous too. How's the bat situation?
No more bats and they think they came in because we got all new phones and PA system so the ceilings and walls were open for wiring. I wonder if it's the same with the mice.

Thank you! I never realized how prevalent this is in schools, yuck.

That's good. At least one pest is out of your hair! I hope the mice situation gets resolved, yuck.
