I work at a university, and today I had lunch with a coworker so we could go offsite and discuss two positions I would like to apply to. The positions are in his line of work, but are in a different college within our university.
I invited him to lunch (with the clear intent of asking him about these positions). Today as we were walking over I said, "so lunch is on me since I invited you out today!" He politely declined, then at the counter (we went to COSI) I reached into my purse and he said, "no, no, it's on me!" I protested, but he paid for both of us. At the end I made sure to thank him again.
I feel a little awkward about this since I invited him out, and was pretty clearly mining him for information about the jobs. We were friendly, but it wasn't really a social lunch. I sent him an email afterwards to thank him again for lunch and to tell him I'll get in contact with the people he recommended I speak to next.
I still feel awkward about him paying, however. Should I just let it go? I also don't want to make a big deal about it and make him feel awkward.
