I spent 8 hours on a plane yesterday. There are definitely good reasons people pay more for the exit rows or bulkhead seats. Yes, because of the extra legroom, but also because there are either no seats in front of you or the seats that are there can't recline (and yet there's always someone in the row in front of the exit row complaining to the flight attendant, "my seat is broken!").
I spent $30 on a seat in an exit row when I flew to LA a few month ago because I wanted to do work on the plane, which is impossible with the limited front-to-back space on a regular seat coupled with the fact that the seats recline. I found that out the hard way on a plane once when I had been planning on doing some schoolwork on my laptop. That $30 was money well spent, especially since I got reimbursed for my expenses on that trip.
I've always had an airplane theory that those who prefer window seats also don't mind the full recline, while those who prefer aisle seats hate the recline. Oh and those in the middle seats are just uncomfortable and miserable to begin with. Untested, but good theory, right?
I like the window seat and I am uncommitted to reclining. I find it neither seat position comfortable. I just like looking out windows and having one arm rest all to myself.
I like the window seat on red eyes so I can lean against the wall while trying to sleep.
I like the aisle during the day so I can easily get up and use the bathroom.
I'm mildly anti-reclining. I understand it for sleeping (although really, the 3 inches doesn't even really help for sleeping - you're still sitting up), but pushing it back just because during a day time 2 hour flight seems totally unnecessary.
Amtrak passengers need to lift their damn seats up when they get off the train. So annoying to get stuck behind an empty reclined seat. Losing my space for nothing.

That is an excellent point. When you ride in the FC car, the attendant will normally come by and unrecline the seat.
I also have no qualms about unreclining an empty seat ahead of me on amtrak.

I flippin love taking the train. Once I am going to do the overnight between Atlanta and DC.

You should read my blog! trainsacrossamerica.blogspot.com (if that link doesn't come up I think its in my sig). I take the sleeper at least once a year. Last summer I took the sleeper down the NEC from NYP - DC. There is something glorious about sitting in your own compartment sipping on a drink down the NEC while the rest of the suckers ride on the regional.
I have not yet taken the Crescent but hope to soon. I hope to take it wall the way to New Orleans from NYP.

I have taken the train from DC to West Palm Beach and enjoyed it. One Mothers day I took my Mom, Round-trip on the Acela First Class, between DC and NYP because I LOVE HER. You can imagine what that cost me. One Christmas we bought the same tickets for my in-laws.
I'm another shortie whose feet don't touch the floor (anywhere, not just planes) and who sleeps with my head on the table, though that's pretty hard to do when the seat is leaned back in front of me.
On the topic of footrests, I like the look of the one y4m posted but this one is even more compact. Has anyone ever tried something like it? Not sure if the swinging motion would get annoying.
My concern about that one is that there are likely some planes or places in the plane where it wouldn't work well - it's depending on a setback pocket, etc. right? Mine is freestanding so it works in the bulkhead too.
This one gets good reviews too, and is a bit wider than mine (but also a bit larger).
Some people also recommend the beach ball trick for feet (although I can't imagine getting away with that for takeoff and landing, and I often use my footrest then.
I just put my head down on my arms, like you would if you fell asleep at a desk. Except more crunched.
I can't fathom that being comfortable at all.
It's a plane; no petition is comfortable.
And as much as I agree these people are assholes, I hope it keeps happening. If the airlines lose enough money and suffer enough aggravation, maybe they'll stop tryng to stuff more and more people into a small space.
More likely, they'll just change it so chairs don't recline at all.
