L was born with a very small VSD. Apparently it can't be heard with a stethoscope and we only know about it because he had an ultrasound when he was at Sick Kids. We go back for follow up with the pediatric cardiologist later this month.
Just wondering if anyone has experience with this and the outcome was for your LO. Did it close on its own? Did it require surgery?

My DD was, but she is only 3 months old. Due to our family history of CHD, she had two echocardiograms within the first two weeks of life and our cardiologist said that it was very minor and that he anticipated that it would close on its own and he would recheck in a year. At her two month well check, my ped couldn't hear the murmur anymore, so it did likely already resolve.
**ETA: the only reason she got those echos is because of our family history. I have the feeling that if we did not have that history, they would have just waited to see if it would resolve.
I was born with a small VSD, which was probably only found because they were checking for another hereditary heart defect. It closed on it's own before I was 2, with no lasting issues at all.

(Lurker chiming in.) I was born with a VSD and DS was born with one as well. Mine closed before I was 2. Ds's is still there and very noticeable with a stethoscope. At this point they doubt it will close. We saw a pedi cardiologist a few times his first but now just have yearly echoes and EKG's. Other than the VSD he is healthy as a horse. Nothing stops this kid. I sometimes forget that he has it.
G does. The hospital found it when he was born and they did a baseline echo. We followed up with a pediatric cardiologist when he was 2 months and they did a f/u echo that showed improvement. The doc was completely unconcerned by it, but he's getting checked again at 6 months.

L does. It showed up initially in a fetal echo. Was heard by the pedi at 2days old. We went for a follow up echo at ~7wks and confirmed it.
The pediatric cardiologist was completely unconcerned, said it was so small that he was surprised that it was even found and it will likely close on it's own, but that he wants to see us at a year to follow up.
At our 6mo well baby the pedi heard it and said that it was louder than in the past, which means that it's likely closing.

My nephew had VSD, as part of Tetralogy of Fallot. He just had his 3rd open heart surgery 13 days ago at 7 years old. He is doing wonderfully, magically well. This time, they closed the hole that did not close on its own. He also has had valve replacement twice, and some other stuff that is more complicated. The VSD is one of the more common and simpler fixes, but it is absolutely astounding what they can do. We are amazed and grateful. My nephews life, other than the surgeries, is perfectly normal. He is sturdy, healthy, and happy. It is easy to forget what a gift he is, until you see the scars on his chest. Even if the VSD, requires surgery, while scary, it is "routine" for the doctors, and very, very likely to be successful.
DS has a VSD and ASD, diagnosed at birth. They did an ultrasound and EKG (if I remember correctly) at the hospital and they determined the holes were minor. We followed up with a pediatric cardiologist around 3 months who did another EKG. Both holes are still present but the dr said they should close on their own- if they don't he might have to have surgery. Our pedi can still hear murmurs so they still seem to be there. We go back at 9 months again to the cardiologist.
My OB doc said many kids have them but they're diagnosed now more- no idea if that's accurate. Hope your LO grows out of it!
DD has Tetralogy of Fallot and had a pretty large VSD. She had open heart surgery at 4.5 months to close the VSD. Even with the surgery, the VSD didn't completely close but her cardiologist said the hole is pretty small and he's monitoring at this time with hopes that it will close on its own.

My LO has a shunt. Can't be heard on stethoscope, either. I think he's about the same age as your LO. We go back to the cardiologist for an u/s in two months. GL to you guys!
