I've learned the hard and painful lesson about what happens when you don't listen to grumpy knees. My previously injured knee (the acute injury was 8 years ago, but it gets achy from time to time) is feeling particularly stiff and sore, so I want to give it a rest and scrub a couple of midweek runs.
Question 1: would you do elliptical or spinning or something else in place of running midweek, or should I suck it up and take full days of rest?
Question 2: would you adjust the long run mileage this weekend (assuming I'm feeling good in a couple of days- obviously I'll not run if it's still hurting) because of the lack of midweek runs?
I had runners knee for years and had to wear a knee brace in order to keep running. I would take a couple days rest with icing and foam rolling. Then sub out runs for spinning if it kept bothering me. (I never needed a knee brace when riding my road bike) I wouldn't increase long run mileage unless it was only a mile or two. One week of lower mileage won't throw off your training. Injuries happen.
Woke up today and my knee felt much better, but I decided to take the day off anyway just to give it extra time to repair. I'll do an easy run tomorrow and break out my old knee brace - hopefully it will continue to feel good.
