I don't know how people commute every day. Seriously. And my 35 minute commute right now is going AGAINST traffic. How do people do it when they are in traffic? How do they not go insane?
doglove I commuted when I lived in San Francisco. 35 miles took me 1.5 hours on a good day. I look back on it now and I don't know how I survived. I did that for TWO YEARS!

D is coming back in two weeks!!!
Dang! I don't know how I could have ever done that. I am so spoiled having lived one mile from work.
doglove, I have a short commute and pretty much always have. I am talking 15-20 minutes. However, with my one job I would have training classes that were an hour plus away. The worst commute was having to drive to Philly. The way there wasn't nearly as bad as the way home. On the way home it was stop and crawl traffic for about 30 miles. At the time my car was manual transmission!!!!!!!! My legs hurt so bad by the time that I got home to the point I could barely walk.

Music. It's how I survived.
ditto
I don't find my half hour commute to be too bad. Gives me time to unwind from work before being bombarded when I get home.
I just got this WTF-worthy sales email. Apparently Overstock would like to remember September 11th by offering me 40% off of living room furniture. I have know idea who thought tragedy-whoring was a good way to promote a sale.
Public transportation! You can do whatever you want while someone else gets you there.
Have you been to Raleigh? There is zero reliable public transit. Complete and utter stupidness.
Cincy too, there is a decent bus system but not much else. They fought the streetcar project tooth and nail (there's talk of expanding the line, if they do it will be amazeballs because I could take it to work).

I know. You didn't ask what I thought you should do, though. You said you didn't know how people did it. When I had an hour commute, I sat on the train and did the crossword puzzle. That's how I did it.

I knooooooooooooow. I was just venting about how dumb it is down here. So many people move here, but yet the county's delay and put off a transit system that would make it easier to get from Raleigh to Durham/Chapel Hill.

I am annoyed that we whore out Memorial Day, Veteran's Day and Labor Day for sales too! Makes people lose sight of what those days are really meant for.

What *is* the point of Labor Day? I'm not sure I know.

It is a day that was created to celebrate the American Labor Movement. (My response was going to simply be to celebrate workers, but I knew it was more then that)
Per Wikipedia: Labor Day in the United States is a holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. It is a celebration of the American labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of their country.
Labor Day was promoted by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor, who organized the first parade in New York City. After the Haymarket Massacre, which occurred in Chicago on May 4, 1886, U.S. President Grover Cleveland feared that commemorating Labor Day on May 1 could become an opportunity to commemorate the affair. Thus, in 1887, it was established as an official holiday in September to support the Labor Day that the Knights favored.[1]
The equivalent holiday in Canada, Labour Day, is also celebrated on the first Monday of September. In many other countries (more than 80 worldwide), "Labour Day" is synonymous with, or linked with, International Workers' Day, which is observed on May 1.
Retail Sale Day: To take advantage of large numbers of potential customers free to shop, Labor Day has become an important sale weekend for many retailers in the United States. Some retailers claim it is one of the largest sale dates of the year, second only to the Christmas season's Black Friday.[8]
Ironically, because of the importance of the sale weekend, some of those who are employed in the retail sector not only work on Labor Day, but work longer hours. More Americans work in the retail industry than any other, with retail employment making up 24% of all jobs in the United States.[9] As of 2012, only 3% of those employed in the retail sector were members of a labor union.[9]

I don't side eye that as much - I think it's reasonable to assume that people might go shopping when they have a long weekend. However, this is not a holiday/day off of work. It's a day of somber remembrance. And buying cheap made in China furniture is not, in my mind, a way to remember those who died.
I do everything in my power to not going shopping on Memorial Day or Labor Day.
Sort of. I'm going into their town Saturday. I asked brother if he wanted to make plans for dinner. He mentioned getting together with other family, but I'm not comfortable around my aunt's boyfriend. This started a whole hoopla.
I'm realizing there isn't one family member of mine I actually like and consider a friend right now. Maybe a younger cousin? It's a lonely feeling.
