East Coast US- city suggestions for road trip

What are your favorite or must see cities on the East Coast for a road trip next summer. We have no plans so far, just throwing around the idea for a summer trip next year, so any suggestions are appreciated. TIA!

-Where are you coming from? Are you driving from your home, or are you going to fly someplace and then rent a car?
-Have either of you been anywhere on the East Coast before? Is there anything you especially want to see or avoid?
-What would you like to see or do? Beaches, historical sites, foodie restaurants, drink craft beer or fancy wine, shop, go to baseball games, stay in a really posh hotel?
-How long do you have, and how many places would you like to see? Do you want to stay in the same area or go up and down the coast?

I've had some great meals and beer in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia, plus both cities have plenty of historical sites. NYC is great for shopping and people-watching. Those cities are very walkable. You could catch a baseball game in any of those cities.

Washington D.C. has a ton of monuments and museums, most of which are free. Baltimore is close by and also has some neat things to see and do.

Nice beaches along the Jersey Shore, and I also liked Rehoboth Beach in Delaware. I was bored in the Outer Banks, but we stayed on a lovely beach. If I was more of a beach person I probably would've loved it. I prefer to walk around and do lots of stuff, rather than chill out by the water.

We went to Vermont a few years ago, basing ourselves in Burlington and driving around the state. Lots of great beer and scenery. We also like the Lake George/Lake Placid region of NY State as well. If you have a passport you could drive up to Montreal.

I haven't been to Maine in years but I want to go with MH sometime soon. The Bar Harbor area is really nice. I'd also like to check out Charleston and Atlanta someday. And maybe Key West. Ny sister said she liked Virginia Beach and my mom recently had a nice time in Ocean City, Maryland.

If you have at least a week, you could hit DC, Philadelphia, and maybe New York since there's about a two-hour drive between each city. It's about a 4-5 hour drive between New York and Boston, if you'd rather do those two within a week.

We are open to anything- not super into shopping or posh hotels, but we're not opposed either. We like craft beer, historical sites, foodie restaurants, baseball games, beaches.

We are trying to decide on a road trip with 1-2 days in certain cities and cover a lot of ground or if we want to pick a few places and spend 3-4 days in each.

This past July we did a 14 day road trip. We flew one way and rented a car and made it to Glacier, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Devil's Tower, Deadwood, Sturgis, Crazy Horse Memorial, Mt. Rushmore, Badlands, Corn Palace, I-80 truck stop & Antique Archeology. We spent 10 days between Glacier, Yellowstone & Grand Teton then 4 days driving to Detroit. We had a great time and wouldn't mind a similar trip on the east coast, but we won't have a full 2 weeks.

I would start in Boston, drive down to NYC, follow to Philly and then if you want, continue on to somewhere further south.

Depending on how much time you have I'd do NYC, Philly, DC or you could do the reverse order. They're all about 2 hours apart from each other and have a wide variety of the things you're interested in. If you want to skip DC because you've been there before then you could do Philly, NYC, Boston, but I personally enjoy DC over Boston and visit DC every few months without running out of things to do/see.

In the summer, I would spend three-four days in Boston and then three-four days on the Cape in the Yarmouth area. Boston is fantastic for historical sites (Freedom Trail is free) and great restaurants. The Cape has more great restaurants (fantastic seafood) and Cape Cod Baseball where you get to see the future stars of baseball when they are young. www.capecodbaseball.org If you are a baseball person, check out the list of famous players who have gone through the Cape league. Just make sure you are not driving to the Cape on a Friday afternoon.

We did asheville this summer, and loved it! Hiking, rafting, swimming at the lake, hot tub at the cabin, great food, Biltmore...

eta - with 7-10 days you could even do a few days in Outerbanks.

Leaving from Detroit and head east heading all the way to the coast via the Great Lakes would make a fun road trip, hit the 1000 Islands before heading totally east through Vermont and New Hampshire. Hit Maine (mmm Lobster) or Massachusetts. Then head South till you run out of time.
