The voice thread has taught me the answer to this one. Roly Poly. I'm yet to see one in real life.
I'm not sure they are very common around here. I haven't gone actively looking for them since I was a kid, but usually you'd find them (pill bugs, Oregon) when moving rocks or big stumps of wood. Of course this also tended to turn up earwigs and centipedes, so it was a risk.

That looks nothing like a potato though! Unless they infest potatoes or something?
