I'm confused about how the word is used.
If someone identifies as a transgender woman does that mean they are a woman who is changing into a man or a man who is changing into a woman?
Also, does transgender mean that the person is in the process of having surgery to change into another gender or that they simply identify as another gender?

I have a friend who is transgender. He identifies as a transgender male (born female). Well, not anymore-now he just identifies as male.
He uses hormone therapy but will probably never have surgery.
"Transgender man: People who were assigned female at birth but identify and live as a man
Transgender woman: People who were assigned male at birth but identify and live as a woman
Transgender (adj.): An umbrella term for people whose gender identity and/or gender expression differs from what is typically associated with the sex they were assigned at birth.
Transsexual (adj.): An older term that originated in the medical and psychological communities. Still preferred by some people who have permanently changed - or seek to change - their bodies through medical interventions (including but not limited to hormones and/or surgeries). Unlike transgender, transsexual is not an umbrella term. Many transgender people do not identify as transsexual and prefer the word transgender. It is best to ask which term an individual prefers. If preferred, use as an adjective: transsexual woman or transsexual man."
It all depends on the person and where they are in the process, both mentally and physically. But basically -
Transgender man is a person who was born with the physical attributes of a woman but identifies and lives as a man. This can include taking hormones and having surgery, but doesn't necessarily.
Transgender woman opposite from the above.
For some, once they have had surgery and are living as their desired gender, they no longer like to be referred to as Transgender. That's personal preference though, so there's no blanket rule.

My cousin as well. Identifies as female, born male, probably no surgery any time soon.
I have a question, but I'm afraid I'll get flamed.
What is the term for a man who dresses like a man, goes by a man's name, but wears full makeup, false eyelashes, etc. Is he transsexual? I don't know his reasons for doing so and wouldn't dream of asking him. Sorry to be ignorant.

Totally not flameworthy imho, and don't apologize for being ignorant -- quite the opposite: kudos to you for asking the question! Ignorant would be not bothering to ask it! :Y:

I don't think this is called anything.
I thought he would be referred to as a transvestite?

Honestly, I think more men should wear make up. I think H's blue eyes would really pop if he wore some mascara since his lashes are so light. Maybe 50 years from now men wearing makeup will be no big deal.

He's a male that identifies as a male, he just wears makeup.
Sounds like Eddie Izzard. I think he identifies himself as a transvestite or cross-dresser, although he wears men's clothing, mostly. He also wears gender-bending clothes, like trousers paired with a long coat and heels. I guess there are degrees of transvestism?

Makeup or not, that depends on what gender he identifies as.
