I don't understand the reluctance to be considered anything other than middle class. Everyone wants to be rich, but no one wants others to *consider* them rich.
We were Actually Middle Class for a luxurious three years. Both of us were Actually Poor for our whole lives before then and now we are both students (which is its own luxury in a different way). I felt borderline wealthy for those years after where I came from. Perspective is powerful.
I think these calculators would make more sense if we threw out the bottom 10% and the top 10%. I think the median income says more than the mean.
I'm not middle class according to this and I knew before I took it I wouldn't be, but I think we can all look at those with more and feel solidly middle after the evaluation.
It's not just an average:
Notes: Figures are from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2010-2012 American Community Survey in 2013 dollars. They reflect the household income of the middle fifth of residents in each county. Counties with populations greater than 20,000 are included.
I think it's easier for me to recognize that we are upper-middle because I grew up pretty poor and the difference is obvious.
If you grew up middle/upper-middle, it's harder to see how many "extras" you actually have, because to you they are a given. (Like paying for preschool or having your kids involved in sports or music lessons). If you are doing the same/worse than your parents, I guess it's harder to see that you are still doing better than "middle."
I wish they did this by county and number in household. I think it is interesting to compare it county wise but it feels ingenuine when we aren't figuring that we have a dual spouse household and two kids.
Would that make us appear richer or poorer? I am not sure lol.
I don't understand the extreme abhorrence in admitting you're upperclass STATISTICALLY. Hi, I'm Cville, and I'm not middle class. No, I don't bathe in champers* or drive a Bentley, but I have an easy financial life. Really! Even with my outrageous student loans and HCOL daycare costs! Even though I have to save up for major purchases, like cars! EVEN THOUGH I COULDN'T JUST FLY MY FAMILY OF FOUR TO MAUI THIS WEEKEND AND STAY IN A POSH HOTEL SPONTANEOUSLY, LIKE A BALLER.

I don't know what's funnier - the people who make triple claiming they're still middle, middle class or claiming that everyone in the USA is and always will be middle class.
Okay, now I'm straight-up laughing at, "This is America. Virtually everyone is middle class."
I bet she can't even see outside her bubble.
Fyi this person probably makes well over $200,00 year and lives in a county with the following "middle class" income range Middle class in New York County, New York is
