I remember a library was mentioned previously that allowed you to basically subscribe to their eBook library without living in their area. I'm thinking it was around $20-30 a year. Does anyone know what library that was?
Out-of-state residents can obtain a card by paying an annual fee of $50.00. If you wish to pay by mail, please print out the PDF application and send your check for $50.00. If you are registering for the first time and wish to pay online, please complete the form below.
Out-of-state residents who wish to renew their library card, please print out the PDF application (indicate your current card number) and send your check for $50.00. The Free Library does not have an online payment option available at this time for renewals.
That said, you may want to do some shopping around in your area. The New York Public Library and the Brooklyn Library allow anyone in New York state to join even if they don't live in those areas (though you do need to sign up in person for BK). Your area may have similar rules for libraries, so maybe you can join more than one.

Thanks v, I think that was it. I will check other counties in my state but everything driving distance to me is one library system
It's the Free Library of Philadelphia. This is my second year as a member but I will not be renewing. It used to be $35 and three week loans, but at $50 and two week loans it's not really worth it. I would definitely check out your local library. My local library has a better selection than Philadelphia.

your local library probably has Kindle books available for download, so you won't have to drive.

No, my problem is that my local library doesn't have a very good selection of the ebooks that I want. Sometimes they will have books 1 & 3 of a series but not 2 (or in one case books 1-5 & 8-10 but not 6 &7).
I mentioned driving because V said that to sign up at a library near her, you had to go in person.

gotcha. I was responding from the pediatrician's office with both of my kids, so obviously I was a little distracted.

Happens to me all the time
Half the time DD distracts me before I can hit submit and then I never post because by the time I get back to it, my comment is irrelevant.

Look around though -- Brooklyn requires in-person sign up but the New York Public Library does not so rules vary!
I use the Philadelphia Library. I was able to snag a free membership a few years back (military) and I get books from there all the time. If I had to pay to renew I would because it would cost less for me to pay the $50 than buy every book that I want to read. I haven't been disappointed with their selection. Occasionally I run into a situation here they don't have the book I want. In that case I head to my local library and get a copy (not ebook). There are some long wait times on popular books.

check your acct settings. they default you to a 2 week loan period, but you can change it to 3 weeks. i just changed mine.
for me, they have a much better selection than my local library and many more copies of the books. i also download a ton of audio books to keep me sane during my commute.

Nice! This was definitely not the case when they first changed the loan period to 2 weeks--I checked then. They must have changed it due to patron responses. Thanks for pointing it out!

The ny public one was an easy sign up. Had to send them info. No longer use it as DH moved. Philly is you live in PA you can get a free card with your local library card number under access pa. (Can get at least one of the Pitt ones too, but that required in person sign up)
