In this day and age, it's so important to have credit. So, yes, having some and not carrying a balance is better than having none.

That being said, though, I personally don't keep any CCs open that I don't use. Having been a victim o fidentity theft, I don't take any chances. I still have 3 open cards, though, between DH and I, and my FICO is in the 800's. So ... I also don't buy into the concept that you shouldn't EVER close your CCs either.

We don't have any credit cards at all. We do keep a line of credit attached to our checking account and a healthy emergency fund.

You will likely need to use the cards once in a while to keep them active. Put literally a pack of gum and pay it off monthly is sufficient.
