I want to say we used the oat cereal instead of the rice stuff, however DD never liked it plain so we always mixed it with the fruit/veggie purees just to help make them more substantial.

No, my ped preferred that we start with fruits and veggies and not introduce carbs until they could eat them as whole pieces, so that's what we did. My oldest started food around 5 months, my second wasn't interested until 8-9 months and my third was around 6 months.

We did not. Skipped it because it's not as nutritionally dense as veggies, avocado, fruit, etc (which we started mashed at 6 mo). If those things hadn't gone over well I would have considered adding a cereal of some sort but so far so good.

We skipped it but are thickening fruit and vegetable purees with the oatmeal powder when it gets too thin. Next on my list is to make my own rice or oatmeal cereal for this use, just haven't put the time into figuring out how yet.

Huh. This is what we started with. I had no idea it was nutritionally garbage. I think the doc suggested Rice vs. other kinds to start since kids react less to Rice.

I have been feeding it to DD. I got free samples from Nestle so just used them. All of my friends IRL started with cereals. I give a cereal at breakfast then a fruit or vegetable at lunch (I'm on week 2). I am starting oat cereal tomorrow. I have also mixed some vegetables that she doesn't seem to like in with the rice cereal.
We did with dd1, not with dd2. I don't have strong feelings about it either way, but the ped recommended it for dd1 so we did it. With dd2 I didn't want to go out to buy it on the day I felt like starting solids, so we used sweet potato.

We didn't do rice, but we did do baby oatmeal, along with BLW. We actually fed it to her once, and then had daycare do it. It's fortified with iron, which I liked.
We did baby oatmeal among other purees and foods. My doctor actually recommended it for the iron. It seems like some cdn doctors are concerned about babies getting enough iron?
In retrospect, I think I only tried to feed the rice at breakfast, and I've since learned she just hates eating in the morning. She might have liked it if I fed it to her later in the day. Oh well, the oatmeal has been just fine.
I don't view the rice cereal as evil like everyone else here. It has so many vitamins and iron added that there is a nutritional benefit to it. It's more a vehicle for the iron, etc.

I agree with this. My pedi is very pro cereal whether or rice or oatmeal and he leans pretty crunchy (like even the most crunchy MMM would approve sometimes). He had some very valid reasons for it.
I gave it to DD once as I had a free sample. She wouldn't touch it so I never tried it again.
I never did rice with DS either but he gets a ton more plain oatmeal than DD ever did. He loves it and my kid is the hypothetical .2% mythical child that sleeps well with it.
I don't think it's poison, I don't care that other people use it (not using it is pretty much an internet thing in my world actually) I just didn't care that much about it.

We are skipping as per my pedis suggestion. He said it's getting a bad rap, but since i EBF there is no need. He said babies have enough iron stored to last until 6 months and then we start solids, with meat within two weeks to introduce iron.

Ok. I feel better now that others have responded. Our doc said they were all fortified now (cereals) and that rice was just less of an allergen and to start with that. I had no idea it was considered 'evil' by so many.
We are using a combo of BM and formula most of the time (I BF when I am home) and I mix one or the other into the rice cereal.
Day care used it to thicken purees when B was first starting solids. I used oatmeal and since I bought a case I still try to use oatmeal occasionally mixed with apple sauce or yogurt. B was very much not interested in table food for the first few months we tried but he loved being spoon fed for a little while.

We used it. EBF, so iron. And it was a good practice spoon food. It was only a few weeks as a "meal" and then we just add a little to a bottle/day and to thicken purees as needed so they get a little iron boost before they're fully on solids.
