We are skipping as per my pedis suggestion. He said it's getting a bad rap, but since i EBF there is no need. He said babies have enough iron stored to last until 6 months and then we start solids, with meat within two weeks to introduce iron.
Weird the difference in medical opinions.
Does the Dr want you to puree meat? Just curious.
I tried to start solids at 6 months but DS refused them completely for almost a month. Then it was 2-3 spoonfuls of sweet potato or yogurt a day for another few weeks before he really started eating.
No cereal at all. My babies weren't really into spoon feeding and neither was I.
High iron foods that don't require pureeing a roast are things like egg yolk, ground beef, chickpeas, slow cooker chicken. We never pureed meat but I did intro it before 7 months.
Huh. This is what we started with. I had no idea it was nutritionally garbage. I think the doc suggested Rice vs. other kinds to start since kids react less to Rice.
The brand I buy has 13 vitamins and minerals in it. The 14th one listed on the label is Vitamin A of which there is 0%. So I don't understand the nutritionally devoid claims except that it is nutritionally devoid of Vitamin A. I specifically asked my pedi about this and she said "absolutely you should start with it." In poking around on the FDA website, it talks about arsenic being present in all rice products because it is absorbed from the water in which rice is grown. So it's not just found in baby rice cereal, it is in all rice and rice products with brown rice having the highest levels. They are studying effects of arsenic as consumed over a lifetime, not over a few months of eating rice with some purees.
DD does really well with spoon feeding and we started with rice and had no issues with it.

Those are 13 added vitamins and minerals, though. They do not naturally occur in rice, and supplements tend to be poorly absorbed compared to things found in actual food.

Sure, but I am not feeding my baby the basmati rice in my rice cooker just yet, so I can only go by what is on the label of her rice can. Her formula also lists a ton of vitamins and minerals. I can only hope she is absorbing something out of the cereal and formula I've been feeding her since the BM ran out.
We did oatmeal, not rice cereal, but we used the "just add water" kind. No bm or formula necessary.
I think Canada must make them all be this way? I've had various samples pass through, and all were "just add water".
That's interesting. I also don't do much straight oatmeal because I don't want to waste the milk when he inevitably doesn't finish it. My container says to use milk or formula to mix, or water for kids older than 1 year. Obviously it's such a small amount of water that it shouldn't make a difference, but I never thought to try it.

Yes. I didn't go into details because I figured we would back for his 6 month appt. before I got to this stage.
