I've been a ton of times, but always on a school trip, so everything was planned for us, and no hotels I would stay at on my own. I'm attending a conference near Mt. Vernon Square. Anywhere near there, or even anywhere near the yellow, green, or red metro that would be worth taking a train in for would be fine. I'm pretty flexible, but need to keep it around $200/night. Thanks!
I'd avoid most things on the Green line. For me personally, I'd probably stay in Old Alexandria, and take the King metro station into DC, which is right on the yellow line. Old Town is fun to walk around in. There is a hotel right across from the station, there is also a Kimpton hotel (Hotel Monaco) on King street, which I love. There is also a Hampton Inn right by the station. There is a free trolley that goes up and down King street, so if you stayed farther down King street from the metro, it's easy and free to go up and back to the station. Chinatown area on the red line would be fun but I think it will be pricier than you want.

There is a Grand Hyatt on H Street around 10th or 11th NW. I have stayed there a few times and it is a good hotel. Also it is walkable to Mount Vernon Square. You could also walk to Metro Center or Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro stations and go a few stops.
Also I would disagree with a previous poster about the Green line. I live on the Green line and I live in a perfectly wonderful area of DC. It's just an area without hotels or I would recommend the SW Waterfront area
I was just in this area a couple weeks ago for a conference. I stayed at the Washington Plaza Hotel - it was clean and comfortable, and it was about a 10-minute walk to the Mt. Vernon Square area: www.washingtonplazahotel.com/
I went to the same conference last year, which was held in the Renaissance Hotel (it's a Marriott). I wanted to do the same this year, but it was sold out by the time I booked. Much nicer than the one I linked to above. Nothing wrong with the Plaza, I just preferred the Renaissance: www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/wasrb-renaissance-washington-dc-downtown-hotel/
I don't know when you're staying, but I looked at December dates and they're well under $200/night. I booked last-minute both times so I paid more than $200. When D and I went to DC for sightseeing years ago, we stayed in Alexandria and took the train into the city.
If you want a meal or drinks in that area, I really liked dinner at The Pig (close to the Washington Plaza Hotel) and the lunch prix-fixe menu at Graffiato (walking distance from Mt. Vernon Square).

Hi yourself! The conference I'm going to is at that renaissance, but they're sold out the final night and I don't want to change hotels. My goal is to have a list of four or five...the other Dean is going but he's out of town til Monday. I dont want to just decide, ya know?
Thanks, girls! I love Kimptons so I will check those out...I think I have an account with them, too.
I love the idea of Alexandria and metroing in...I've not spent much time there.
I love Alexandria, but I'd be a little cautious about staying there on the weekend (I think you said you'd be there on the weekend) cause there is always some sort of track work going on. When we lived in Alexandria my mom stayed with us and trekked it into the city, but it took her over an hour each way to make it to her conference.

There is an online maintenance schedule at wmata.com. There is nothing upcoming on the yellow line at all. Mostly green line. But you can check it out to see your dates. link
