The release form for most scope procedures (lung, stomach, colon, etc.) all have a statement that biopsies may be performed if something suspicious is found. Just because it wasn't in the original procedure plan doesn't make it "unauthorized." She most likely signed the okay to have that done if needed. We won't know for sure until someone sees the release.
The selfie? More inappropriate than I have words for.
...my old doctor wouldn't say hi to me if I saw her at the mall because of confidentiality.
Is it standard to not converse civilly or even to greet a patient when seen outside of practice? This seems rather extreme to me.
When I worked at a Mental Health clinic we were told not to speak to clients unless they approached us since it could put them on the spot explaining how they know us and force them to reveal that they were getting mental health treatment and thereby breaking HIPAA in spirit if not in fact.
How do cell phones get in to the OR? I've been living in a fool's paradise where I thought doctors couldn't bring those germ factories in to surgery with me.

typically they are brought in but kept outside the sterile field, usually there is a tray by the OR door where they are put so that a non-sterile nurse can answer if they ring in case it is patient related and needs a quick response.

The circulating nurse in charge of this patient (Joan) would not of let some random doc walk in and take a unnecessary biopsy then take a selfie with her, I will /cannot believe this story. That being a major part of my job; advocating for the patient in every aspect.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was done at an outpatient clinic. It's Yorkville -sonething- , but it is mentioned in multiple news sources. There's no OR persay at a gastro or ENT, just a procedure room.
