i was so determined to keep my long hair, but after going through the Great Postpartum Hair Loss of 2014 it is in a sad, sad state. i have an appointment Friday to get it cut and i need to pick a new, shorter style until it gets some volume and life back. it's currently a few inches below my bra line and i'm deciding between something medium length, layered to shoulders, or going shorter into a bob. how important is the option for a pony tail going to be? that's the great debate right now.
I did. I went for a heavily-layered longish bob. Being able to ponytail was non-negotiable for me…. in fact I think I told the stylist my only two criteria were that (1) it would look okay without being blow-dried and (2) able to pull into a ponytail.
Before and after. I miss my long hair but it's great to have it (mostly) out of DD's reach and I love that I haven't touched a blowdryer in months. Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted
Yep, but I always had short hair before getting pregnant anyway. I chopped it off before it started falling out. I'm just now really pulling out lots of hair when I wash it. *sigh*

No. I always keep my hair short bc it looks better that way.
I don't feel the need to have it long enough to make a ponytail. A- if it is that long I never actually style my hair. It's ALWAYS in a ponytail. B- it's way easier to style shorter hair. I don't even need to dry it. Just put in some product and I'm done.

Yes, I got a mom bob around 4 months pp, chopping off about 8" of hair. The decision was 100% attribuable to the hair loss. I'm so glad I did, there was much less hair to clog up everything.

I made my stylist promise to not let me chop mine this time. Sure enough, I want to but I know I will regret it. So instead I'm going a lot darker on the color next week.
Yep. It wasn't really because I was a mom though - just finally got around to chopping off my non-style. I color it and it's fine so after a while it turns limp and blah. It went from about bra strap length to a bob right at my shoulders. I can still put it in a ponytail.
I always regret big chops to my hair and yet I still do it occasionally. At least it looks a lot healthier right now.
I'm tempted to chop it because I'm so frustrated at how much hair I'm losing. I pull out handfuls every time I wash it or brush it. But I'm afraid of cutting it and looking like a "mom". I'm seriously freaking out about the amount of hair I'm losing. I'm going to have like, 5 hairs left at this rate.

can you explain this?
Since I've had short hair pretty much my whole life I don't associate it w moms. Tbh I'd never heard the term "mom chop" until TB.
So do you think all short styles look frumpy or is it a combination of age and hairstyle or you don't trust your stylist?

I had long long mid back long hair when I had my daughter and then when I had my son. 6 months after having my son, lots of my hair fell out. It was awful. I cut several inches off, trying to salvage the length, then more fell out, to a point where I had less hair that wasn't 1/2 long than my toddler daughter. No chance of even a bob when I finally gave up on it, which took longer than was reasonable. So now I have a super short pixie that I love and I'm not sure I'll go through the hell of growing it out again. I had a short cut in high school, grew it out, then cut it super short in college, and grew it way out, then chopped it off again.

My mom has "mom hair" and her mom has a similar length. DH has made it clear he hopes I don't follow in their footsteps as I get older haha

For the first time in my life I didn't regret my cut this time! I went darker too. But I cut a lot, and usually I'm a little sad but this time I really like it... So if you still feel that way even after you color it then go for it!

but you and your dh realize you can have short hair and not look frumpy right? I keep getting the idea people think all short cuts are terrible and I'm curious wwhere that comes from.

Oh yeah I do (I think he does?)
I don't know where the idea came from but I assume it's mostly from not knowing anyone with a stylish short cut-which is the case in our circle...
Also I'm pretty sure he does think "all short cuts are terrible" but that's just a personal preference
My hair was never long, always around shoulder length or shorter. I did chop it after J was born but it's pretty normal for me. It's just easier. Like pp said , the ease of wash and wear is great. The pic with the dress I blow dried, the pic with J is air dry.

but you don't have to know someone to know it's possible. Plenty of celebrities have awesome short cuts. Internet? Style books?
I cut my hair at 3.5 months PP. I regret it, mainly because I let her go way too short. I have naturally curly hair and it's actually much easier to style once it's a little longer. This lady just kept chopping, which resulted in random, wonky pieces that stick straight out from my head. It's not so much that I regret getting a haircut, it's that I got a bad haircut.

I went from mid-back to just above my shoulders. My hair is very curly, so I thought it looked better longer, to give it some weight. But it looks so much healthier now that I chopped it that I might keep it around this length.
I got it cut about a month before DS was due, in preparation for not wanting to deal with all that hair. I was not thrilled that my stylist took too much off (because I needed a certain amount to donate it) and I couldn't get it in a ponytail. Then I was like 'oh well, it will grow out a bit in the month I have left before the baby comes'. I definitely wanted the ponytail option for the hospital. Then DS was born less than a week later, whoops! Even in labor, it ended up not being an issue having no ponytail option. Somehow it was just short enough to stay out of the way.
I just cut mine a couple weeks ago. I've had shoulder length or shorter hair my entire life, until about 3 years ago when I grew it out. Long hair is very high maintenance for me and I was ready to go back to shorter. I can still pull it into a (tiny) ponytail, and it has drastically cut down on the hair pulling and styling time. It was in a ponytail 100% of the time when long anyway. No regrets.
No mom chop (I hate that term) but I often grown my hair out for a while and then cut it shorter for a while. Right now a have a slightly inverted bob and side swept bang (I can still get it in ponytail). When it's longer I like long layers, angled in the front and side swept bang.

No, I have naturally curly hair. If it's short I an forced to style it and blow dry every day. With it long , I often wear it in a bun to work, it's cute and very easy. I also really dislike shot hair on myself
