Is there a reason for the 4WD? There are a number of good AWD vehicles out there that are great winter cars (Subaru is my favorite) and they are more fuel efficient than an AWD.
Look at the April Issue of COnsumer's Reports for used car evaluations and recommendations for different classes of vehicles. Your local library should have a copy.
I just bought one I found on AutoTrader.com (from a dealer). I looked up what Edmunds said it was worth, looked at reviews, and then googled other listings of that car to make sure it was priced competitively compared to those or if I could use some of those as leverage for negotiating.

I love Carmax. They are hassle free and the prices are usually pretty good. Maybe not lowest possible, but fair and you avoid the whole day haggling at the dealership.
AutoTrader is good. You'll want to run a Carfax report (I think they're like $20 per report? its been a while since I've run one) if the seller doesn't provide one (Carmax does). Also reference NADA blue book and Kelly blue book values to make sure you're getting a good price.
