Anecdotally, we have a friend who is married to a retired NFL player. For a long time, he was not violent at all. More years in football = escalating violence. According to his doctor, it's due to head injuries lowering impulse control. The doctor told her if most adults have 100% impulse control, he's down to about 30%. And that this is common among NFL players. Sure, the violence of the game may play into the impulse being to hit and hurt, but I think it's lack of control in the brain for the most part.
Fortunately, she is filing for divorce (although that does put her in greater danger in the short term).
Head injuries to former and current players are a whooooooole other ball of wax that the NFL shamefully doesn't want to touch with a 10-foot pole. They're not the only league to not give a shit.

This is horrible. I mean I knew that head injuries caused problems (obviously), but didn't think about the impulse control and DV.

Eh, I may not agree with every Jezebel point but it's not wholly off the mark, IMO. If the NFL does nothing, will you keep watching? Will you keep buying tickets? Merchandise? If so, you continue to enrich owners, managers, coaches, and players who rely on abusers to sell their product.
As long as the fans and advertisers will still fork over their money, the NFL gets the message that it's handling things in a satisfactory manner.
