Trim her nails. Just use the nail clippers and get the little point off. Also, try a cardboard scratcher. Every cat I have had loves them. They climb on the cat tree but scratch the cardboard thing.
Try another litter. We use worlds best at the sanctuary. They have a lavender scented one. It clumps super tight and makes cleaning really easy.
The spray vottle is a good idea too for when you catch her scratxhing something she isnt aupposed to be scratching. Shoot the water near her you dont have to hit her with it. My kitty was always afraid of the christmas tree because when he tried to climb it the first year, we sprayed at him. From then on her always left a two foot gap between him and the tree and he stared at it warily. It was hilarious.
Instead of paying $20 for a fancy cat box we recently switched to a $5 tote without the lid. The sides are taller than any other cat box and it was super cheap. Win-win
My vet told me not to put baking soda in the litter box because they end up inhaling it and it causes respiratory issues. I think the Cat Attract litter is really good. We put some of that anti-fatigue mat in the closet under the litter box and it catches all the extra litter (http://www.homedepot.com/p/Buffalo-Tools-3-ft-x-5-ft-Anti-Fatigue-Rubber-Mat-Flat-RMAT35/100648174)
I also trim my cat's nails. He gets a treat after each paw. lol Start by touching her paws just to get her used to the idea. Soft paws are a good idea though.
Oh and Petsmart has a 'new' litter system that consists of pellets & a tray that goes underneath to catch the urine... stay away from that! LOL - I was able to 'beta' test it years ago and it was worse than a conventional litter box with a good quality litter.
This? We love ours, no smell and no litter everywhere.
yep, that's it. how many cats do you have? at the time we had 3 cats, so maybe that was the problem...

My friend has that one with one cat. I don't think she's great about scooping it out but OMG the odor is awful. It does not mask the smell of shit AT ALL.

yeah, it wasn't good when we used it. And we used it as a 5th box ... so it didn't get the same level of use that the others did. I will say that our house smelled more like pee when we used it than when we just used basic litter...

We had a big furniture scratcher, lost a leather ottoman. We used cat nail covers - little curved covers you can slide & glue onto the nails after a trim. They last a while and just grow with the nail or fall off. Plus a lot of really strong, sturdy scratchers in lots of varieties - flat and vertical. My cat scratched the hell out of her tall, vertical scratchers. But variety is the key.

I use arm & hammer multi cat and have no issues. I smell nothing, and my company doesn't either. My mom doesn't smell it and she is super sensitive to it. I scoop every morning.

I have one of each, so I make sure there's a hidey hole for one and a tree for the other.
Thanks for this. We have a lofty style duplex and she never hangs out on the ledges, but ripped apart the lining under my sofa chase so she could climb up into it for naps.

It was a major lightbulb moment when I first heard it. It's so simple but so easily overlooked!

I have one tree cat and one bush cat. My tree has a "house" and 3 platforms. It serves them both well.

I just ordered this scratch box thing. Thanks for the recommendation!
It is awesome! Your kitty will love it!
We have two of these. I spray them lightly with some catnip spray and my cat LOVES them, she scratches them constantly.
OP, if your litter box is too small for your kitty, get a large Rubbermaid tote with super high sides and try that. We use the arm and hammer multi cat (even though we just have one) baking soda stuff and it's great.
We feed our cat Natures Variety Instinct Raw. Very basic, good quality food. Iams and Fancy Feast have fillers like corn etc and crap that cats shouldn't be eating.
Also, we have two cat window sill seats, one upstairs and one down. We put a bird feeder outside by the window downstairs - instant cat TV, entertaining for hours.
Make sure that when you play with your cat, you wear him out. Look for "Da Bird" toy if you don't already have one. Get your cat moving, a real workout. This will hopefully help with releasing some energy.
We put packing tape sticky side up on the places where our cat isn't allowed. She learned fast. Cats hate tape on their feet.
Spray bottle is a big help as well as Bitter Apple for the chewing.
