Wha to do with $$ we want to use in 2-4 years?

Quick background: H is taking a new job (22% raise), and I'll begin working part time some point before Christmas (40% pay cut). H is getting a signing bonus for his new job, and a big layout on unused vacation and sick time from his current employer. All told it should be just into five figures.

My budget spreadsheet looks at the "worst case" scenario-- I may work a few extra hours and bring I more money, same for H. We may be able to cash flow without paying off the last of my student loans ($4k @ 6.55; $4k@2.0).

If we don't HAVE to pay off the student loans, we'd like to save the money to add to the downpayment on our next house, which we would probably buy between late 2016 and late 2018. Our savings account rate is abysmal.

Where is MM investing "short term" these days?

Do you have any sort of financial planner? We were/are in the same type of situation. We had a chunk of money from the sale of our house that we want to invest while we are on assignment, but want access to it in 2-3 years for our next house. And we want it to grow without too much risk. We told our financial planner our goals and wishes and said go for it.

No, we don't have an established relationship with a financial planner. I met wih one last summer, whom I thought was an hourly fee based planner, but lost interest in working with him after he tried to sell me stuff.
