I'm getting my first cut and color in an embarrassing long time. My hair is long and boring and spends most of its time in a ponytail or braid. It's wavy-ish straight-ish and currently a washed-out red color. I need a change! Suggestions?

How ready are you for change? I think a layered bob with some warm highlights would look great on you. However, if that's too much, maybe shoulder length, layers and warm highlights...

I have hair kind of like yours and I recently got something similar to the Heidi Klum picture above. It looks great and is still long enough to pull back. Before that I sort of had a Claire Danes on Homeland sort of hairdo.
I like the chin length of #3 by downtoearth - Are you brave enough to cut that much off? It would be a very easy to care for style and cute on you as well. Have a GOOD stylist do the cut - and listen to their advice as to what would look good on you and suit your lifestyle and preferences. This is not the time to go cheap.
I don't like Kristen Bell's cut (the blonde) because it looks so choppy. They layers don't blend enough for what I prefer. The second one of Minka Kelly (the brunette) is better because it has softer layers and would look great. The one I posted has blended layers, but they are still 'harder' than Minka Kelly cut. I like long bangs that end at cheekbones or jawbones because you can create a faux side swept bang or you can blend them in with your hair to go for a no bang look. Kind of the best of both worlds.
If you like the red, this color could work well for you:
I flove this but how the hell do you keep it out of your eyes?!

I style mine (blow dry root forward and opposite direction of part/sweep direction, then blow dry ends to bend back the other way) so that it isn't actually laying on my eye, but right at my eyebrow. Sometimes I will take a bobby pin and pin back the top layer. Most often I can just fling it back with a shake of my head. My hair is fine and isn't heavy so it typically doesn't fall forward.
