My pedi doesn't have a preference. H got it 2 years ago and thought it was yucky until they gave her a lollipop. Last year they didn't have it in yet so both got the shot.

Our pedi let us choose. I picked the shot because she hates the nasal suction bulb thing so much, I thought she would personally be more traumatized by that.

The mist is live, but B hasn't gotten sick from it beyond a couple of sniffles before (he has had it three times before this year). I will say that last year P still got (a mild case of) the flu even with the shot, but B didn't get it.
Henry has been getting the mist for the past 3/4 years (our pedi starts at 3 and strongly recommends it because I guess it's better immunity wise?). He hasn't gotten sick from any of the previous ones. He gets this years' next Tuesday so I can let you know then
Typically nasal shots give higher immunity. Your body has the ability to mount an immune response more like it was a normal exposure, so more parts of your immune system are given a chance to respond to it. Thus, higher protection. I think that's why some docs recommend these over other shots once the kiddos are old enough to handle an attenuated virus rather than killed.
I haven't read through all the comments yet, but THIS. It's recommended for younger kiddos because it gives a higher immunity. BUT, shots are also effective. We always pick shots because the one time we did a mist for Edie, she blew it all out and, though that's typical and they say it's OK, it wierded me out!

I'm glad this was posted. I didn't know all this info and it sounds like I may want to ask for the nasal this year-, since R will be too little I want to make sure everyone else is well protected. Does anyone know if I can get the mist if I'm nursing?

According to a good friend who is actually in the know about these things, the only people who cannot get the mist are actual very sick people. Meaning, people on post-transplant anti-rejection meds or people in the very late stages of AIDS. But at the same time, I'm not sure if there's actually an additional benefit in adults. Do you want me to ask her?
She is actually a person in the know. She works in public health and vacciens are her thing. Not like my Dr Google or anything.
