I got Mirena last week. No problems with insertion, and I only spotted for a couple of days, if you can even call it spotting. I went with this over paraguard, since I have PCOS and basically never get a period, so my OB said if I did paraguard and wasn't getting periods, I'd have to come in every 60 days for progesterone anyway to induce a period so my lining wouldn't build up. Mirena keeps your lining thin, so no worries if I don't get a period.
We were going to have DH get the snip, but then I freaked out and said if we win the lottery or something in the next five years, I'd want another baby... So..... Yeah.
I've had both the Paragard and the Mirena. Insertion is roughly the same for both, and with both I experienced spotting for a few weeks after insertion. With Paragard I had massive cramps and very heavy periods, and they were longer--typically at least 7-10 days (yuck!). With Mirena, my periods were almost completely absent for the first two years, and then for the last two years they were light enough that I only used pantyliners.
I much preferred the Mirena, so I had a second one inserted around 7w pp. It fell out around 10w pp, and I had another one inserted at 12w pp. This one is still in there. I've heard that current recommendations are to wait until at least 8-10w pp to insert an IUD because of the increased chance of expulsion. (It didn't hurt or anything when it fell out, and insertion was a breeze after pushing out a baby.)

I have a Paragard, because I've had adverse reactions to progesterone and felt I should stay away from the hormones. I've been really happy with it. Insertion was pretty easy, and my periods are just about the same as they were when I wasn't on BC. Overall, I've been happy with it.

I had a paraguard IUD two different times. The first time, my cramps and periods were no joke. It was pretty bad. The second time around, minimal cramps and normal periods.
My periods were pretty bad in year two (the first year doesn't really count because I was nursing and things were wacky.) But I've had it for 3.5 years now and everything is back to normal.
So it's basically like not even being on birth control at all. I never even think about it anymore.
