I've never been sick enough to call into work, but if I did, I'd call in if I was contagious and/or physically incapable of doing my job because of vomiting, pain, etc.
I'm worse than a man with a man cold so I use to call in or work from home pretty often. One thing I know about me is that I'm a terrible employee.
I totally disagree. Keeping your germs to yourself does not make you a bad employee. You're using sick time or pto or whatever your policy is, which is part of your benefits/compensation package, and you're being considerate of the health of CWs. AND you even work from home sometimes.

If I feel like shit, nothing too important is going in and I have the time I would call out. No one wants your germs around. There isn't a prize for never missing a day. I

I'll drag ass to work through a lot. I don't have to feel **that** awful to call out as long as I have a clear schedule that is okay to miss. Since that doesn't happen much, I have to have a fever/contagious to call out the rest of the time. Or if I really feel like I am going to make myself sicker to go, than recover.
If you have a pretty generous sick day policy and your boss is very understanding, I would definitely stay home under your circumstances. And hey, kitty cuddles are very healing and you can only get those at home.
If I don't have a meeting, it takes very little for me to call in. Stomach problems or headache can keep me home.
If I have a meeting, I have to be really bad because it's a pain to reschedule. Sometimes I'll take a half day and just do the meeting, but usually once I show up, I just stay.
If I'm going to be annoying my coworkers with coughing/sneezing/sniffling but don't feel too awful, I telework. If I'm really feeling shitty I call in sick.
I don't have a job where I get to call in sick. The last time I was truly sick (strep throat), I switched shifts with my boss so that I could be on meds for most of the 24 hours it takes not to be contagious anymore. I haven't called out in... 6 years? So basically since I started working full time while in college.
I did take a day off last year after we put my dog to sleep, but my boss knew why I was taking the day off.
I was home yesterday and today. I had a sore throat Tuesday and yesterday. Now I have left over congestion and dizziness. Working from home is incredibly easy in my job so I don't feel bad keeping my germs to myself.

It takes kind of a lot for me. It is always more work when I stay home than when I go in because I have to prep everything for a sub and then try and catch all my classes up.
If I have a fever, a stomach thing, or am contagious, I will stay home. We get enough germs passed around from kids going to school who shouldn't be there that I don't want to pass things on as a teacher too. But if I've been on meds and am not contagious but still feel crappy, I will often go.

the usual things, fever, barfs, poops, and I will call out if I've lost my voice as well. I'll have them do something else, but i can't lecture if I have no voice

I have IBS, so I end up calling out of work often. Anything to do with fevers and stomach related ailments, I'll stay home. I'll go to work with a cold though.
Thank god my job gives me a lot of sick/vacation/personal days
When I was working, I called out relatively easily. First I worked with elderly people in a nursing home. A simple illness for me could be much, much worse for them. Then I worked with kids, many who were immunosuppressed & the majority who were not good about washing hands & keeping them out of their mouths and noses. I didn't mess around with it. My job as a therapist is very important, but not critical on a daily basis. I rescheduled most of my appointments, so no one missed anything when I was gone.
I'm not sure what I'd do if I worked in an office setting with otherwise healthy adults.

When it would beneficial for me out my class to be home than at school. I go in sick and try to keep my germs to myself usually, esp if I know there are no good subs available or I'll miss an important meeting. Bathroom issues or vomiting, I'd stay home.

Puking/fever etc or absolutely zero voice. I get laryngitis super easily when I get a cold. I teach preschoolers for a living which means having no voice makes my job super difficult. In the last 4-5 years I've called in sick 4-5 times. If I have a cold and haven't lost my voice (like last week) I just guzzle water & tons of emercen-c and take Dayquil.

I rarely call in sick because I am sick - it's frowned upon unless you are basically dying (which is stupid but that's another story). I have called in suck for personal days though
We have a coworker going through her third round of chemo. I stay the hell home if anything is remotely contagious. I also have ibs and would rather have my own toilet on bad days.

My last job, my boss was an ass if I called in. I WFH now and haven't had to call in yet. I've taken a long nap for lunch but nothing much more than that.
