DD has decided that for her birthday this year (she will be 18) that she wants to go to NYC for the weekend. Aside from seeing a show, doing the wax museum and WTC memorial, what else should I put on the agenda? I think that we are getting tickets for the Lion King (again, her choice) and going to do Times Square and that kind of stuff. We will be there for 4 days and 3 nights. She is also bringing a friend, would you be ok with letting her go out by herself at night? She will already be 18 when we go.... Struggling with the whole she will be old enough thing right now. Any help would be appreciated.

That is one of the things that she picked to do.... Not me, I was all set with it, but I figured for something to do during the day, why not?
Because NYC is the center of the universe and going to a wax museum would be an actual crime. Please pick something more culturally valuable.
LOL, duly noted.... I will let her know that. I am sure that we can sway her away from that, and the MOMA sounds way better to me. And since we are paying for the trip, we should at least get something out of it. lol
Everything Berbles said is right on. I was walking around NYC by myself long before 18, but you know your kid best. Is she savvy and does she have common sense? Has she traveled often? If she is just going to be walking around Times Square/heavily touristy areas and you are staying near there too, I wouldn't see it as an issue at all. Give her a cell phone and tell her not to stray too far. She has to get out and see things on her own sometime!
She walks around Boston all the time by herself, so no, I don't think it is a problem per se. And obviously she has a cell phone, so I guess I would be ok with it. She has traveled, and been places by herself, I think that going out at night to somewhere that is 18+ is what is making me nervous. lol. Mama Bear coming out I guess.
Um.... kind of, but I have been posting more here. Am I missing the fact that she was just being sarcastic? or am I really just having that bad of a day that I didn't notice that?

But maybe that is too much of a downer for a happy trip.
She actually doesn't want to do Ellis Island, she went in the 8th grade, had a panic attack, and hasnt wanted to get on the ferry, or go the the statue of liberty since.
Step one: get a sense of humor. Step two: take your kid to st. Marks place. Step three: moma, AMNH, and the met are all good plans Step four: she'd love Central Park and serendipity. Go to there.
The sense of humor is important in NYC, because there are a lot of assholes like me and KA.
Don't get ripped off by one of those cycle cabs. My H and I did. Dumb tourists. Definitely see Times Square at night. It's chaos but it's one of those things you have see at least once.
I have no idea what your daughter is like, but in my opinion, Boston & NYC are not alike at all. Boston is more laid back while NYC is a hustle-bustle vibe.
Walk the Highline (the final segment opens this weekend).
Window shop on Bleecker Street in the West Village (the good shopping and lovely ambience starts northwest of Christopher Street), in Soho, and in the Meatpacking District.
Get lost in Central Park.
Explore Williamsburg.
For views, go to the Top of the Rock.
Eat a weekday breakfast at Balthazar.
Go to Rockefeller Center and window shop on Fifth Avenue.
And then if you have time left, go to the wax museum.
kwx2 Sorry you're having a bad day. I was just trying to be silly. And a bit combative and bitchy, sure, but with undertones of silly and a hint of trying too hard that lingers on the palate. We're good now, right?
So you were this classic New England treasure of a beverage in human form? That's fucking accurate.
