This article from espn is long, but detailed. Sounds like Rice actually told many people at the NFL the truth, but they hoped it wouldn't get out. It's not excusing Rice at all, but pretty damning for the NFL.

This isn't in response to you, but I'm so sick of hearing about that damn video, as if the whole thing wasn't real until people saw the video.
I don't get it.
Honestly, I thought the video inside the elevator was less damning than the video of him carelessly dragging his unconscious wife off the elevator.
Everyone knew from the onset that it was undisputed domestic violence. From the footage outside the elevator, I would have imagined what occurred inside was much, much worse than what did. I would have thought he was raining punches on her.
Yet everyone else seems to have the opposite reaction. Thye saw the unconscious footage, knew Ray hit her and then when they see that footage they gasp "fucking horrible! much worse than we could have imagined!"
Really? Maybe I have a sick imagination because I could easily imagine more than one punch. Did these people imagine she had tripped or punched herself?
It's really scary to me that no one took it seriously until that video and evidently won't again UNLESS there's video.

I never followed this story previously because I live under a celebrity news story rock, so there was a video of him dragging his wife out of the elevator previously? There was just no video of the actual punching? How did he say his fiancé became unconscious, drunk? I'm assuming she had some sort of injury.

So yeah, that's pretty fucked up :?
basically the NFL claims they only saw the video of him dragging her out. They were at a casino so I'm sure they were planning on using the we thought she was just drunk excuse but it blew up so big they weren't that dumb, though it's implied in the 'we didn't realise the extent blahblahblah' They had the incident report and saw the dragging which was more then enough to show his egregious behavior.

I agree. It's the callous uncaring way he handles his wife's body, dragging her and dropping her, letting the elevator doors close on her legs. He's not kneeling at her side saying, "baby are you ok? Wake up!" He's not apologizing or asking for help. She's just an object he has to deal with. It's that part of the video evidence that shows his cruelty and that not only did this happen once, he's probably knocked her cold many times to act so blasé about it. Seeing the punch proves she wasn't drunk but assaulted. The other video shows is wasn't an accident or a horrible one time thing. It's a serious behavior problem.

Yeah, the initial video that everyone saw from TMZ (I think) was of him dragging her out of the elevator and she was completely unconscious, totally limp dead weight. And he fucking dragged her and left her foot in the way of the door. He just looks at this hotel worker like "Well, aren't you going to help me here" . The worker said "She's drunk?" and then "No cops". Rice didn't answer.
Ray never told a lie about what happened, as far as I know.
So that was the footage everyone saw for quite a while, and it was already known that it was a domestic abuse case when people first saw the video. Then TMZ got hold of the footage from the camera inside the elevator.
And there was all this shock of 'OMG, he punched her, that's worse than I thought' and I really don't get that, since we knew when we saw the first video that she was knocked out cold in an incident of domestic violence. I don't want to come off like I'm ranking domestic violence, like some isn't "as bad"....but seeing the state of her as she was dragged out of the elevator, a sole punch is like the best case scenario, know what I mean?
Ok, now I need to take a shower because I feel dirty.
But just what did people think domestic violence looks like? Some have said they expected it to be an open handed slap but I don't know what led them to expect that. Who gets knocked out like that from a slap?

I agree with you that the second video shouldn't have been necessary, but there were people suggesting that perhaps she had tripped and fallen in the elevator or had passed out because she was drunk. This sounds absurd, of course, but for people who doubted or, perhaps more to the point, people who had difficulty wrapping their heads around the idea that a man would actually strike a woman, seeing the punch itself was a game-changer.
ETA: I will add that as frustrated as I am with everything surrounding the release of that second video, I'm very, very happy it was released.

But no one saw the video until AFTER Rice was charged with domestic abuse, so how could they think she tripped?
Or are you saying that they figured maybe Rice hit her, and then she stumbled and hit her head? I can only think you've got to be really heavy duty Ravens fan to be limber enough for those mental gymnastics.
ETA: Oh, sorry, I think I get it now. Like maybe they thought Rice was charged in error by the police based on his wife being unconscious, when really he hadn't done anything? Hmmm, I never even considered that and I'm pretty distrustful of police usually.

The worst part of either video is that he obviously didn't give half a shit that he had knocked his fiancée unconscious. He wasn't upset or apologetic or freaking out, he was acting like her being unconscious was blasé, and also a PITA. It pretty obviously shows that him hitting her was a pretty frequent occurrence. I don't know who TF these people are that didn't think it was bad until the second video. The first told us much more than the second, IMO.

I agree. At the very least, you'd think even an unrepentant wife beater would be trying to hustle out of there before he got in trouble. But no, as an NFL pro used to living in a rarified world of privilege, he just looks at the hotel worker like "Why aren't you taking care of this for me?" and is suddenly too weak to lift his wife up.
It really bothered me that he left her leg in the path of the elevator too, I keep expecting to see the door crash into it every time I see that video!
I've watched the video from inside the elevator a few times now, and I still can't see the blow that knocked her out due to the angle. It didn't look like a full swing. The first video from outside the elevator was more shocking to me.
The link doesn't go to the article (just ESPN's front page now) but I'm calling bullshit on them all. Considering he and the players union are about to argue that the tape was "edited" and the whole scenario can't be seen (so yes, he's implying we can't see her provoke him), if the NFL knew more was up that could possibly exonerate him (and themselves), wouldn't they have been all over that?
