This morning my mother's brother died. He lived his life on his own terms, was a unique individual and often not a very nice person. My grandparents idolized him, they said he was a genius. Several times they gave him large sums of money to start businesses which he lost to gambling debts or pissed away. He died penniless. He had struggles with drugs and alcohol. He wasn't nice to his wife and neglected her when she was sick and dying. He had affairs and at least one child outside of his marriage. He wasn't a good dad and was awful to my cousin as she took care of him these last few years. My parents did everything they could to help him and he took advantage and treated them poorly.
But....he was one of the funniest people I ever met, an amazing storyteller and often a lot of fun. He was fearless and did what he wanted, when he wanted to do it.
I haven't been close to him in decades but when my mom found him this morning and they called to say he died, I cried. He was a person with amazing potential and I wish he could've chosen a different path for the sake of his family. I hurt for my mom and cousins.

I'm sorry. I had an uncle like that. It was hard for me when he passed away. To this day his daughters and I have fond memories that we laugh about often.
He might not have been the best person, but he was a good uncle to me.
